Sindh govt mandates polio vaccination for those departing on international travel

Those travelling in the next 4 weeks will be immunised at the airport.

KARACHI: The Sindh health department on Thursday directed officials to vaccinate and issue polio vaccination certificates to all international travelers immediately.

In this regards, a special counter has also been set up at the Jinnah International Airport where health department teams will facilitate travelers for vaccination and certification, health officials informed The Express Tribune.

All the medical superintendents, district health officers and town health officers, not below BPS-19, were authorised to issue polio vaccination certificates.

The provincial government has taken immediate measures after a consultative meeting held with top health officials in Islamabad on Wednesday and after a thorough meeting with provincial officers on Thursday, Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed issued orders for passengers embarking on international travel.  He added that the format of the certificates will be on international standards.

“The orders are being imposed immediately,” confirmed health department’s special secretary Dr Suresh Kumar. “All passengers will be facilitated at the airport.”

Dr Kumar said that all major hospitals, including teaching hospitals, are entitled to issue certificates. “There are no charges – the certificate is free of cost.”

The government mandated that those undertaking travel in next four weeks will be administrated a polio vaccine dose at the time of departure. All passengers leaving Pakistan regardless of their citizenship and age will be administrated vaccine.
