They did not fall when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was rearrested under Martial Law Regulations a few days after being bailed by Mr Justice KMA Samdani of the Lahore High Court in the murder case of Nawab Mohammad Ahmad Khan. The arrest came when Bhutto came to Lahore from Karachi a few days later and was received by massive crowds, unnerving the army dictator of the time. He was arrested that same evening and sent to Kot Lakhpat jail where he was kept in appalling conditions, his barracks deliberately chosen to be next to those that held violent lunatics who screamed and shouted all day and all night.
He was kept under those conditions, in a tiny cell with not even a charpoy for almost two years, until he was moved to Rawalpindi Jail, again to a tiny cell with no charpoy, until he was hanged after his review petition against the death penalty handed down by the hanging bench of Maulvi Mushtaq was rejected, both trials very widely considered as being completely unfair, his execution being universally called ‘judicial murder’.
As an aside, Justice Nasim Hassan Shah who was one of the members of both the hanging benches, being ‘elevated’ to the Supreme Court just as Bhutto’s case was to be heard there, admitted as much in a stunning interview conducted by one of the most tenacious journalists in the country, Iftikhar Ahmad, in his Jawabdeh programme some years ago. One has to see it to believe the chicanery, the plain skullduggery that went on, but the skies did not fall.
But let’s go back a little for the Bhutto trial and the utter cruelty with which it was held has no parallel in the judicial history of even a half-civilised country. The skies did not fall when the trial was sent straight to the Lahore High Court whose Chief Justice was the newly brought out of retirement enemy of Bhutto’s, Maulvi Mushtaq, who had been superseded and who made no secret of his extreme hatred towards Bhutto. Nor did they fall when Maulvi decided to head the bench himself over Bhutto’s protestations that he did not have any faith in Maulvi.
The skies did not fall when one day, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was refused the straight-backed cane chair on which, because of a bad back, he used to sit in the back of the police pickup truck to court and back. When Bhutto refused to sit on the wooden bench in the pickup, telephones flew between the jail superintendent and the High Court which finally rescinded its order and allowed the chair to be placed in the back of the van.
When the judges entered the court room Maulvi shouted, “Why are you late?” Bhutto explained that since he had a bad back and the usual straight-backed chair was not provided in time he could not come until it was. “Remove his chair”, roared Maulvi, “You will keep standing all day”.
“My Lord, don’t treat me like this, I am the former President and Prime Minister of this country.” “You are a criminal, and if you don’t shut up, I’ll have you whipped in jail — I have the authority”. But friends, the skies did not fall. Neither when the matter of his being a Muslim came up! I ask you.
Nor did they fall when his wife and daughter were not even allowed to attend the funeral of their loved one and he was given virtually a pauper’s burial with a dozen or so attending. This shamelessness was repeated when another leader was killed under the orders of another dictator, the Commando this time, and no one from Nawab Akbar Bugti’s family was allowed to attend his funeral, only eight servants saying the funeral prayer. But, the skies did not fall.
The skies did not fall when then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was removed from office and locked up in Attock Fort by another dictator, yes, selfsame Commando in 2009, and then exiled along with his whole family including aged parents. Or when he and his brothers were not allowed into the country to bury their father.
They did not fall when Begum Nawaz Sharif was prevented from leading a protest demonstration and her car was picked up by a police crane and towed to a police station and kept suspended for eight hours in the burning June sun.
The skies did not fall when Nawaz Sharif was allowed back into the country by the Supreme Court in 2007, but was sent right back in handcuffs by the dictator Commando. I ask you.
None of the above has ever happened to any one belonging to any ‘institution’, ever! Even the profligate Yahya Khan was kept in house arrest and before that in a most salubrious rest house in Abbottabad with more than enough Black Dog in the larder; valets, batmen and all.
And yet, all seven of the skies came tumbling down on our heads when a journalist and TV personality was shot multiple times in Karachi and his family informed the country of his suspicions as to his would-be attackers. Whilst the way in which his channel went about repeatedly showing the picture of the head of the ‘institution’ was completely uncalled for, the reaction from the ‘institution’ was not needed.
It is elementary that one should not go around demanding the banning of this or that newspaper or TV channel for two critical reasons: there are other penalties such as heavy fines, indeed criminal action where malfeasance can be proved against individual actors; and two, the negative publicity whipped up by other channels, and the ‘institution’ through rather small demonstrations by banned outfits may actually help the media under attack IMPROVE its demand/circulation.

The youth of Pakistan are tired of being held hostage by the politics of the previous generation that continue unabated from an incident that is over four and a half decades old (I can picture Mr.Shafi wiping away his tears, “Incident? You dare trivialize this travesty, this monstrous injustice as a mere ‘incident’? I ask you!”) Give it a rest Kamran, nobody cares anymore.
Yes the sky did not fall either when your name was finalized as high commissioner UK but was dropped at the eleventh hour. Would you care to tell who played the smart one. Would you like to unfold the mystery? But this time the sky looks imminent to fall if not on anything else but surely on Jung group, as they may fall under their own weight.
@Abid P. Khan: Dear Abid., I understand your point, but the Major's articles have some good aspects. For example we get a wide range of opinions sent in, which highlight facts and situations which I had either forgotten or was not aware of. Changing tack, I think Mark Twain made some very good points in regard to people in relatively important positions. Two of them were: "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt", and "Get your facts first and distort them as you please". I think these are particularly pertinent points and I would be interested in in our readers opinions as to which of the world leaders, everywhere, they do not apply to?
Thanks KS keep it up
@Arzoo: so very true ..what you just wrote..
@TBS: ".... If you have no other issues to consider than to glorify ZAB and bash the commando, I suggest you retire from writing as you once did from the army." . Seems the army was happy to get rid of you from their ranks. If you say good-bye to journalism too, as TBS suggests, EP readers would skip the pieces of yellowistic diatribe. They would certainly utter a sigh of relief, as the sky won't fall then either.
Maj Kamran Shafi, your selective selection of facts and weak comparisons make for very shallow reading. The vivid details of ZAB's trial and going on and on about it without coming to a point just makes your writing style extremely boring yawn. Indeed, a waste of column space.
The harsh and degrading treatment meted out to ZAB was the handiwork of Zia in connivance with 'Jamaat-e Islami'.Religious extremism has a sordid pattern, infecting every segment of society. This despite the policy of appeasement that democratic dispensations followed to accommodate them.To lump Ayub Khan and Musharaff along with Zia is unfair, mischievous and misleading. Ayub Khan stood firm, taking Pakistan forward towards progress.Musharraf had a tough time navigating the nation towards safety and progress.Religious extremism and intolerance has a grip that makes democracy a recipe for disaster.
Yahya's profligacy is highlighted while ZAB and Mujeeb's obduracy that led to the deadlock in negotiations and civil war is ignored.
Akbar Bugti was not the only casualty. The army personnel who lost their lives, not mentioned and have passed into oblivion. We needn't shed tears over them? There is no political gain to be made out of it.A Sk.Abdullah in Srinagar can be castigated, dragging and enslaving Kashmir. .One lakh martyr's in eiddgah Srinagar tell us the fate that awaits people having sympathies with quislings. Indian tyrany continues unabated while Pakistan grapples with the taliban. A 7 lac Indian army is "protecting" the Kashmiris? It is possible that Akbar Bugti was treading Sk Abdullah's path.
Nawaz Sharif is a gentleman. The 1999 coup is forgiven or he would rather his culpability in the aircraft-episode remains unravelled?
Journalist are having a field-day pounding the government of the day, running with the hare and hunting with the found. Democatic dispensations appeasing the extremists have strengthen them. Zia ul Haq in tandem with Jamat-e-Islami was a catalyst in the process. Ayub Khan and Musharraf tried to stem the drift towards extremism.
What Kamran Shafi has stated are hard painful facts. We should thank Almighty that Quaid e Azam died a natural death, otherwise the way his arrival from Quetta was intentionally neglected and ambulance carrying sick Father of Nation stranded on a road in Karachi, which was than our Federal Capital, are a sad testimony to the manner we have treated our political icons and leaders. Quaid' views about Ayub Khan were ignored. Everybody including politicians, bureaucrats and the holy cows who have miss ruled this country are responsible for mess we are in today. There is no hope unless everybody submits to rule of law and accepts supremacy of constitution, with no ifs and buts.
Totally rubbish as always.
@hussain:::I know of only one constituency because I was a voter there.I am an eye witness of who was voted for most because I as worker of one party was there all day and also saw several hundred voters who could not cast their votes for that candidate because of the time lapse. The candidate who got almost all the votes there, lost the election.God bless
During President Musharraf's term of office about 8 million people people passed away from all causes, and Pakistan is the 6th largest country in the world. I would suggest that the President could only make policy and would find it difficult to keep track of all the mischief going on around him. .I am sure the the President made some bad mistakes either through ignorance of the facts or perhaps through error. I am reasonably certain that any person in a responsible position from 2001-2008 would be unable to look back and say I led a blameless life. Unfortunately, we cannot undo the past and have to move on. I can accept that it is a journalists job to uncover the facts, but I think in President Musharraf's case it should be for the archives. Pakistan has enough problems and if it is to move on and solve them the bitterness has to be forgotten. Otherwise their will be division which Pakistan can live without. I really believe that the President did what he thought was good for Pakistan. Now, at the end of the day, President Musharraf is yesterdays man. It would be better for Pakistan if he had a place in history that was honored if not overly admired.
@TBS: Very pertinent and well placed comment sir
Factual and thought provoking Op Ed. My previous comments were not published and 100% censored. Keep up the good work Sir.
Folks, Give the Major a break. At least he did not send us to sleep with a diatribe about his school and cadet days, which was a plus.
Sir would u like to talk about in your next article about the Atrocities Committed against politicians by the politicians. I am referring to the treatment handed in to Mr Salman Taseer in police station Race course, when he was left hanging all night. Cutting of Tongue of ex president Zardari? Illegal detention of Mr Najam Sethi? ??
@hussain:
kamran shafi is officially 'unhinged'. this man has zero intellectual value add to any current discussion. not sure why he keeps writing. the animosity against musharraf is so incessant and vitriolic that it is clearly something more personal. most sane people in the country would tell you that the 'Commando' provided much better governance than any of the lot of PPP or PML-N could ever even dream of providing. not a single case of corruption against the 'Commando.' Can we say the same of any previous ruler?
Typical Aziz Mian style rhetoric. Nothing new, analytical, or impartial. Same spin, same words, same splash over and again.
Whatever Maulvi or Nasim Hassan Shah did reflects typical Pakistani petty mindedness. We, the Pakistanis, with or without uniform would do anything abuse whatever power we have access to by chance to satisfy our smallness.
Mr.Shafi blockd me on twitter for speaking the bitter truth and now he is advocating for freedom of speech. So hypocritical of him!
Sky never falls in betrayed, corrupt, ignorant, immoral, hypocritic and self praised nations.
The author is of world class in his very subtle satitiric style writing and his narrative about people and history which should and must be appreciated by those who want to learn about the characteristics of Pakistan leaders. What a contrast he displays with his sharp pencil that he used to refer to the man who was the most talented, gifted and visionary personality in the continent in his time and because of great passion that he had for his country willingly agreed to cohabit even with the wolves, versus the present scenari when an old ailing wolf is seeking refuge from medics. Hamid Mir is not only a great jounalist but recognised in the world as an independent investigating jounalit who told us about the man who was most feared in the world, and his reports about Talibans are usualy considered reliable.

Yes, skies did not fall also when Mr. Z A Bhutto had Mr. J. A. Rahim beaten up at his house by FSF forces until Mr. Rahim, an elderly man and one of the founders of People's Party, was bleeding profusely. The thing most detested by our Creator is arrogance; and it always come back to bite the perpetrator at the most inopportune time, as one can see in the example enunciated by Mr. Shafi.
The negative comments above shows how badly Pakistani society is affected by the lies of the establishment, which they inculcated in people's minds during the 67 years of their direct and indirect rule over the people of this unlucky country. Kamran Shafi! even Dr. Abdussalam was abused by these people. So, you have no chance to get your message of sanity through.
Great read sir thank u.
a vibrant article with selected readers. Who cares if sky falls?
@Hamdani: AND you always attempt to discredit him without any proof, right?
Really, why should the skies fall?
A really disappointing piece. All current wrongs cannot be justified because of the other wrongs in the past. Mr Shafi, sir, you have disappointed a lot of your readers.
I look forward to your articles and like reading your angle of things. You should write about solutions out of this quagmire
Skies SHOULD fall when an innocent person is killed and it should not depend on whether he was an ex prime minister or a just a common man. Only then we can call ourselves civilised.
Bhutto was not a smart politician! He gave us Zia. Politics is about making compromises. He could have saved his life and spared his family and country a lot of suffering. You think military and ISI was not smart in responding to media uproar. But I think it is better to release pressure by speaking than let it build up. Military can take over any time it wants, so NS should tread carefully and learn something from AZ who succeeded in keeping it out.
Are there any countries where the media is totally FREE?
You make it so simple, sky didn't fall when we lost half of Pakistan for disallowing East Pakistanis to form a majority government because of group of power mongers in West Pakistan including ZAB.Mourning one person with so much pain may be dramatizing the issue.let us talk about the bigger issues at hand confronting Pakistan than posting hidden slur on the Defence Forces, you once belonged to.Pakistan is fighting a fourth generation war in which people like you can be more dangerous than an armored division, the Defence Forces are observing the youme- shuhada, the Army of today is so different than when you were a young officer,so take a double and relax, sorry for not getting the coveted job of Ambassador in London.
Sir, you may not remember but we were both instructors at the School of Infantry and Tactics back in 1976. I clearly remember you from those days. I always admired your professionalism though then you were aspiring to one day become a Colonel and were not so outspoken. That did not happen and I think it effected your ability to think and analyze the situation no matter how foggy the ground conditions - traits that you did display back them. Pray spare us your hero worshiping of ZAB. Look deeper into how he declared "UDHER TUM, IDHAR HUM" - Over there you and over here we - conditions that led to the break up of the country. Pray spare us your commando bashing we have had enough of it. Pray spare us your cynicism - the cup brimmeth over. If you have no other issues to consider than to glorify ZAB and bash the commando, I suggest you retire from writing as you once did from the army.
It is not that simple Mr Kamran Shafi. Remember when any media person or journalist claims he has threat to his life from ISI or other intelligence agencies or security forces , rest assure he has committed some crime related to security of the state of Pakistan and his guilt is speaking . What is more important is to trace the criminal activities of Hamid Meer and his associates in the media . Hope you are not one of them and you do not feel threat from ISI ?
An extremely pertinent viewpoint and very well expressed. The Establishment cannot even tolerate a flea bite before bizarrely going into paroxysms of outrage at the 'defilement' of a 'national institution'. As if it were there only 'national' and 'institutional outfit in the country.
Neither did the sky falls when: 1. Nawaz Shareef was produced by the same Army General whose atrocities you are directly or indirectly referring to in your article. 2. Nawaz Shareef and Bhutto's plundered the pakistani wealth abroad building mansions and flats worth millions. 3. Asghar khan pleaded for his case to be heard. 4. Half of your national assembly is full of tax evaders and crooks. 5. When your so called democracy was rigged and 8500 votes were caste in a 1500 registered voter constituency! Sargodha 11 May,2013 6. When Nawaz was announced PM by a media only 5 hours after the ballot boxes were closed.
And I swear the list continues. For Godsake stop this one sided rant and let the people of Pakistan make an informed decision. Regards, Hussain
My simple question is this, is the media 'free' in any country on the planet? Is western media 'free'? What about media in our next door neighbour? In the wake of this, why shouldn't Pakistani media have certain limitations?
All the events you have quite vividly recounted can be debated as to why the skies did not fall. On the Hamid Mir affair you SIr claim that the sky's have fallen.........bit premature and dramatic, is it not.
This author always attempting to set some personal scores. Always speaks as a diatribe, even on TV.. something wrong that brings so much negativity
