Junior Davis Cup: Pakistan falter in qualifiers

Hong Kong dashes national team’s hopes of advancing to main round.

KARACHI: Honk Kong shattered Pakistan’s hopes of advancing to the main draw of the Junior Davis Cup Boys U16 in the qualifying round in Kuching, Malaysia on Tuesday.

This was Pakistan’ second defeat in the tournament as they succumbed to Hong Kong 3-0 in their Group B fixture.

Earlier on Monday, they were outplayed by second seed Chinese Taipei in similar fashion.



The results are a shock as Pakistan had topped their group in the pre-qualifying round in February.

In Tuesday’s tie against sixth seeds Hong Kong, Muahmmad Zaid Mujahid lost to Anthony Jackie Tang 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes.

Similarly, Pakistan’s top U16 player Mudassir Murtaza lost to Hong Kit Wong 6-4, 6-0.

Hong Kong went on to seal their second victory in the competition after beating Pakistan in the doubles rubber. Wong and Tang defeated Mudassir and Mujahid 6-1 6-2.

Pakistan will play their next match against hosts Malaysia on Wednesday.

So far, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong are leading the group with two wins each. Chinese Taipei defeated Malaysia 2-1 in the second match of Group B on Tuesday.

The top team from the group will qualify for the main round which will take place in September.

In the other pools, Korea and Philippines are leading Group A, Japan and Uzbekistan are fighting for the top position in Group C and Group D is being dominated by India and Australia.
