An anti-terrorism court (ATC) convicted a man on Monday and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment in an attempted murder and a police encounter case.

The accused was also given five years in prison for carrying an illegal weapon but the court ordered that all sentences will run simultaneously. The ATC-I imposed a total fine of Rs90,000 and gave the accused, Asad Zia, 15 years in prison after hearing arguments from both sides.

According to the prosecution, Zia and two other accomplices opened fire at police officials when they were ordered to stop during snap-checking in Gulshan-e-Iqbal in 2011. The prosecution said that the accused injured two officials. Following the shootout, the police managed to arrest Zia but his accomplices managed to escape, it added.

Subsequently, a case, No.496/11, was registered against the men at the Aziz Bhatti police station under sections 324, 353 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, along with section 13-D of the Pakistan Arms Ordinance.
