Admittedly, in a country like ours, where the army continues to wield political power even if it is from behind the curtains, any statement by the army chief does merit analysis. The background in which this question and response was made, was one which could point in many directions; each one of concern and a perceptive analysis was necessary.
But, equally true is the fact that our emerging media is in cut-throat competition and some outlets specialise in sensationalising news items. They, therefore, create controversies, even if none exist. They do not advert to the damage they might cause by creating conflicts where none exist.
Having said that; our defenders from the army, police, rangers, the Frontier Corps, the Constabularies, even our youth, of the likes of Aitizaz Hassan and their families are hurting. I am hurting.
I have nothing special to boast of in my career as a soldier. No distinctions, no awards, no recognitions, nothing. I was just an ordinary soldier; a very ordinary soldier. When I look back at my career, perhaps, the one credit I can claim is that in my generation of soldiers, I might number among the very few who spent the greatest amount of time in conflict zones.
Never before in our 67-year lifespan, has our soldier been tested, like he has been for the last decade or more. He has seen more death and destruction than most soldiers — except those who saw the World Wars — will ever see. More comrades in arms wounded, losing limbs, organs, incapacitated for life. And yet, these injured soldiers smile at the ruined future ahead of them, as others smiled at death when she embraced them.
They smile at a ruined life because they ruined their own life to protect their fellow citizens; the duty they had sworn to.
Let me state unequivocally that there is no lack of respect, admiration, gratitude, affection, even love, of the common citizens for their defenders, in any uniform. And yet, our soldier hurts and I, too, am in agony.
In all these years, General Raheel was the first to manage to get the prime minister to visit injured soldiers in hospital. No elected leader visited injured soldiers for years past. Our cowardly elected leaders shed crocodile tears at the execution of Hakimullah Mehsud — the coward who corrupted hundreds of children’s minds, made suicide bombers of them, killed hundreds if not thousands of innocent Pakistani citizens and half as many soldiers.
Self-styled ‘maulanas’ of the like of Munawar Hassan called Hakimullah a shaheed (martyr). Fazlur Rahman, the Grand Maulana, went even further and stated that if a dog was killed by Americans, it would be a martyr too.
I am not a scholar of any subject, least of all, religion. But I do know that shahadat is a consequence of the deceased’s intent, not of who killed whom.
I wonder where these people acquired their titles of ‘Maulanas’. If these were bestowed on them, shame on the one who bestowed them this title. Shame on us, the citizens of this country, including the media, for accepting their right to this title and continuing to address them as Maulanas even after they utter such absurdities.
I number among those who think that the law should run its course on Musharraf.
Let justice take its course, but justice must also be seen to be done. And yes, in such cases, perceptions are more important than realities.
No politician attended the burials of Chaudhry Aslam or that brave teenager. It did me proud to see the army paying homage to the police officer and that valiant Aitizaz. Beware you blind fools. Beware. Aitizaz is our future. Not the Hakimullahs. Don’t bet on the wrong horse, unless you have no political future.
Yes; our defenders are hurting and I am in agony.

@Nadir: Who has given you the right to talk on behalf of all civilians. My dear more than 88 % soldiers are children of civilians. Shame on you for bifurcating them.
May God bless the Pakistan Army and all of our men and women in uniform!
@Ali: well put. ..and don't bother about nadir and et al. ...They are not pakistanis ...I am also an Indian but don't rejoice in the misfortune of neighbours.
i realy disaapointed to see our young generation their clearity of history , plz correct your self , egitate ur mind plz
@Parvez Unum: Useless comment.
@rasgullah: No it was Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
@shah: Absurd and useless comment.
@Ali: Stories to scare us and milk us. Laughable if you think Soviets would have invaded Pakistan.
"Had the Pak Army not fought the USSR in late 70′s, we would have been part of USSR." What do you mean "had the.....", its their job. It wasnt a matter of choice. Not having the foresight to see what would happen as a result of their policies is whose fault? Their own. And now it is unpatriotic to hold them to account for it?
Had the Pak Army not fought the USSR in late 70's, we would have been part of USSR. Before we label Army of creating Jiahadies, please go back in time and think of any other solution. The SURKHAS had already announced a shadow government for Pakistan, to help USSR on its successful occupation. The jiahadies of that time never killed any one in Pakistan. Please try to understand how the enemies of Pakistan are trying to use the terrorists of present time to weaken the state and create hatred against the Army. Army has made mistakes as well, side by side the politicians. We must try to remain united and must not cross the limits in our haltered against the institutions, may it be politics or army. BEHAVE LIKE LOYAL PAKISTANIES NOT AS OUR ENEMIES WANT US TO. Nadir.....Shah
Brig Shaukat Qadir has very ably reflected the heart and mind of every person who ever wore the uniform. My compliments for echoing our thoughts. Thank you!!!!
... an excellent article ... well put, and absolutely correct ...
To get a little perspective of this it would be good if someone could come up with the number of soldiers dead as opposed to the number of civilians killed over lets say the last 10 years. Then a small comparison of the concessional medical facilities available, the travel concessions, the living concessions, the plots concession, the job concessions etc. etc. that our soldier get for themselves and families for life .......as opposed to what the civilian gets. Yes the civilian respects and appreciates what the forces do ..... but when the job does not get done they have the right to grumble.
@Nadir: Well said.
The generals lorded over us with an iron fist for 5 decades, during which one of their many gifts to us was jihad-for-dollars and contract-jihadis. Now they want us civilians to mop up the mess.
Why is Brigadier Saheb hurting? And why is the Chief hurting?
Over the last 5 years or so, Soldiers were being kidnapped, blown up and beheaded and yet no one was hurting.
The same Maulanas, who at one time formed the Mullah-Military alliance,declared OBL a shaheed and no one claimed any hurt.
It seems the hurt originates in the rule of law being established by the courts.
So, should the Parliament pass a resolution exempting the 'Defenders' from all laws to assuage their 'Hurt'?
There is another way of looking at the statement of General Raheel Sharif, the Pakistan Army's Chief. May be he gave this statement One;To pacify the angry young man who had tried to embarrass him infront of the entire present troops and secondly; to built his better image before the rest of the Armed forces in particular and in the general public in general. May be a goody goody meeting with Mr Nawaz Sharif on his return from China will put water on the flames. It is yet to be seen. We will know in a short while as the PM is back from China, as per the current news item. However, the future course of events will tell the actual meaning of his statement. However, the entire media as well as the writer has missed one point and that is this particular visit of General Raheel to the Zarrar Company at this hour of time. There were constant news items in the media against the action taken by the Army against Lal Masjid and even many channels gave chance to the controversial Khateeb Abdul Rasheed. Have we forgot that it was the Zarrar company which took action at Lal Masjid and suffered casualties including one Lt Colonel, the Shaheeds. Choice of time of visit to this set up by the Chief is very particular. (_)
We love our Army and our defenders. They are our true Heroes. Salute to them. Full-stop. And we also hate corrupt political leaders, Military Dictators and Yellow Journalists. Grant us freedom of speech to criticize when a Military General oversteps and overthrows a democratic Govt. It is sole right of only AWAM to elect any one they like, see how they dislodged PPP from Federal Govt. Let people of Pakistan decide.
Err....wasn't it the same Army which created these monsters to get a strategic depth?
So ask yourself - "why were we in bed with them for 67 years?" and " are we still in bed with them today?"
Yes, indeed, not just you are hurting sir, but every patriotic Pakistani is hurting and let me say if Pakistan could express itself it'd also show how hurt and how pained it is to see insults being hurled at those of our compatriots who give their all, including even their lives, to ensure our safety and our prosperity. You have every reason to complaint about the uttering of ungrateful lot of looters and plunderers who pretend leadership here. Yes, they must be condemned, actually chased out of public life for ever for attempting at discrediting our brave military in general and our great army in particular. It's time that these gangsters are exposed completely along with their foreign masters whose agenda of creating hatred for our own forces these enemies in garbs of friends are carrying out while sitting in our parliaments and political parties.
Ten times as many civilians have been killed as soldiers. Do you have any recognition of that ? Do you also recognize that self-destructive policies like "strategic depth" are the root cause of our problems ?
God bless you for writing such a moving piece. May Allah bless all of our officers and men in uniform who give of themselves without being asked for this country.
May our worthless leaders realize their sacrifices and may our nation stand behind our armed forces through these tough times.
Shaukat Qudir almost brought a tear to my eye, but not quite. We are getting used to the type of nomenclature put forward (or should I say drivel) on a world wide basis. I would prefer to read an in-depth analysis of the situation, without bias or sentiment, so that I can assess what should be done. War is a deadly business, and there is no room for sentiment. At the end of the day there are no good or bad guys. What we have are deadly differences of opinion and as a result people on both sides are killed. Unfortunately the stronger side turns out to be the winner of a sort and writes the history books in the winners favour. For example, in WWII 80 million people died. The losers became bad guys, and the winners became heroes. The only thing we can be sure of is that things never change. The stupidity continues.
These are the same TTP and militants that Army officers were happily telling us that we must cooperate with them for strategic depth and to fight of Indian influence in Afg etc. The same military high command that signed peace deals in 2004 et al. And now you come and take the names of young men and women who died because the General's made poor decisions and demand more from civilians? Have some shame. Stop using the people you are supposed to lead as pawns to blackmail the nation!
