Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi said the board was not in a hurry to look for Hafeez’s replacement, saying the think-tank has time to make the best possible decision. He has summoned an extensive meeting on April 15 to consider changes in the team as well as the management.
With Hafeez resigning and the Test and ODI captain Misbahul Haq not playing T20 Internationals anymore, Afridi has appeared as the front-runner to regain the captain’s armband. The swashbuckling all-rounder led the team to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Twenty20 and the 2011 World Cup. Afridi’s removal from captaincy after leading the team in the major tournament was not the fallout of a failure; it was rather a result of certain external factors.
An official close to the PCB’s Management Committee said that if the board preferred experience, then Afridi is the ‘favourite’ for captaincy.
“Afridi is the leading contender,” said the official.
“But he is not the only who will be in contention. Players who can resolve the captaincy issue for a longer period like Ahmed Shehzad may also be considered.” The official also hinted at the possibility of a change in the ODI captaincy with an eye on next year’s World Cup. “All aspects will come into deliberation after the PCB chairman returns from the International Cricket Council meeting next week, where he will tackle the issue of the Big Three.”
Sethi wants world-class coaches for team
Sethi, while speaking to media in Lahore, vowed that he would not compromise on the quality of coaches.
“First of all, I’ve instructed to hire a top fielding coach,” said the PCB chairman after spending a hectic day involving meetings including grilling of the team management.
“We need a full-time physio for the team. We have to make arrangements for the 2015 World Cup that will be held in Australia. We need to prepare for the pitches there. We are looking to hire foreign coaches as there is a need of one or two similar tracks for the preparations.
“The team also needs a batting coach. All the coaches will have to work vigorously with the players.”
Sethi noted his decision to appoint coaches before the Asia Cup for two months was a wise decision.
“The reason was that I wanted to assess their performance. We have the time to consider our options. We have four to five months and we will make the best decisions for team.”
To a query, the PCB chairman said doors were open for former coach Waqar Younis, who applied for the job before Moin Khan was appointed.
It may be mentioned that the contracts of Moin, Shoaib Mohammad (fielding coach) and Zaheer Abbas have expired with the end of Pakistan’s campaign at the World Twenty20.

No afridi or any veteran player those r the chips of the old block nevet been the consistent I think we have to bring the new leadership that is equipped with maturity and aggression.any player who can set the example for others in all sorts of cirumstances with his attitude and performance.old players like afridi hafeez wait for the right pictches to perform even after years of experience.even they dont deserve for the team and bring politics in the team in the form of groupism.u can observe the hollowness of the poor cricket setup in pakistan that every player wana to become the captain of pakistani team irrespective of performance and will make capital out of the situation.had such those players in the other countries they would have been dropped once for all about a years ago.but this is the poor corrupt pakistani system which is backing up those players when their career r almost finished
Head Coach : Javiad Miandad Batting coach : Inzi Bowling coach : Waseem Akram Fielding coach ; Jonty Rhodes Spin Coach : Mushtaq Ahmad Test Captain : Azhar Ali One day and T20 captain : Afridi
I won't blame Hafeez for his performance which was par below but his inexperience with the given captain's role.Everybody is familiar with the fact that Pakistan is unable to keep their nerves cool & that too when they were chasing a monster total. This was a real test for so called professor,he should have shuffle the batting order and promote Shahud at no. Four because he is the who doesn't know what pressure is and further he was in a bombastic touch. It is not that we should ignore our mistakes but actually to learn from them.Changes are obvious and are to made judiciously in order to safeguard the future of pakistan cricket
I fail to understand that how we keep going back to the same people who have failed us time and again.Just to please the senior players you cant make a mockery of captaincy of our national cricket team.Look at srilanka they have given captaincy to the younger lot and the seniors like dilshan, sangakara, jaywardene still perform playing under young captains. We must move on bring the fresher lot forward. Having said that i am a big fan of afridi he brings excitement to the cricketing field and no doubt he is good for the game but he should not eye captaincy as its not his cup o tea.
Oh com'on................please retire all these faces and give us some new breath. How many times we will judge them?????? its all abt feeding them..
We're for Lala!
Ahmed shehzad is best for t20 captancy
Afraid I as captain ???????? Another captain until the next loss.
Afridi is a great cricketer. He should avoid captaincy as it always leads to controversies in the context of Pakistan.
Please for god sake no Afridi, the guy cant control his emotions and nerves, time to move forward.
no mattter if afridi is made captain beacue the duty is fill by misbah in coming year so no use this time. who agree
Afridi would do as a captain. Need to select players on merit, T20 is a special brand of cricket and there got to be few young hard hitting batters around.
If this happens, I'd also be in the group bashing NS for his lack of cricketing knowledge.
