PESHAWAR: Three houses were damaged in as many low-intensity blasts in Phase-VI, Hayatabad, Baghbanan Road, Urmar and Haider Colony, Phandu.

Police said the house of a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) staffer Sahibzada Nasir Azam was attacked with a homemade explosive device on Wednesday night. “The device was planted near the main gate of Azam’s house in Hayatabad’s Phase-VI which damaged the gate but thankfully there was no loss of life,” said an official of the local police station.

“Around 200 grammes of high-quality explosives were used in the device, which caused a loud explosion and spread panic in the neighbourhood,” the official informed, adding the cause of the attack was unknown, but they believed it could be a case of extortion.

In a similar incident on Wednesday night, the house of Muhammad Nawaz was damaged in a low-intensity blast on Baghbanan Road in the jurisdiction of Urmar police station.

The owner of the house told police unidentified extortionists had been demanding Rs40 million from him and targeted his house after he had refused to pay them the sum. He said a few months ago the same group of people demanded millions in extortion from his uncle Haji Sakhi Jan as well. Police registered an FIR in the case and started investigation.

In the third incident, Sadeed Khan’s house was damaged in a low-intensity blast in Haider Colony in Phandu. Police said the house owner was a taxi driver by profession so the reason behind the incident was difficult to ascertain.
