World Water Day: Plan afoot to supply water from Indus River

Capital’s supply network to be repaired.

ISLAMABAD:

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is working on a plan to supply water to the capital from the Indus River, the agency’s Member Engineering and Environment Sanaullah Aman said on Saturday.

Aman was speaking at an event organised by CDA in collaboration with Global System of Integrated Studies (GSIS) school to mark World Water Day, which falls annually on March 22.

The CDA member said the capital’s civic agency was trying to meet the water requirements of Islamabad’s residents. He said CDA has started work on a repair and maintenance project for water supply pipelines in the city.

“Around 75 to 80 million gallons of water a day are being provided to the residents from Khanpur and Simply dams and tubewells.” The city’s requirement stands at around 180 million gallons a day, Aman added.

He said to bridge the demand-supply gap, CDA has come with a plan to repair the water supply network and to supply water from the Indus River to the city.

“Residents waste around 15 per cent of the total water supplied.” Residents should use water with care to avoid its wastage, he added.

The Planning Commission’s Chief of Water Naseer Gillani said that the government was working on alternate energy resources and taking effective measures to ensure increase in water reservoirs.
