Muzaffargarh rape case: DSP, prime suspect, gets protective bail

The victim was allegedly raped and then set herself alight in Muzaffargarh.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday granted protective bail to Deputy Superintendent Police Asghar Ali, a prime suspect in the case of a woman who was allegedly raped and who then set herself alight in Muzaffargarh. She died in hospital on March 14. A division bench led by Justice Shahid Hameed Dar heard Ali’s bail petition and granted him protective bail till March 26. Ali pointed out that he had probed the rape case on merit but the girl committed suicide. He said his name was inserted in the FIR due to political pressure. A provincial law officer opposed the bail petition and argued that the case is pending in Multan and the accused DSP should approach the LHC’s Multan bench for of bail. After hearing the arguments, the court granted protective bail to Asghar Ali till March 26 and directed him to approach the trial court.
