Naturally, the analysts were left to marvel at this sudden royal benevolence and groped for answers. The inference again was that Islamabad was, perhaps, moving away from its long-pursued policy of non-interference in Syria to one favoured by Riyadh, and that the cash represented a reward for this about-turn. To repudiate this perception, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz took time out to tell a parliamentary panel on March 17 that there were no strings attached to the money gifted by the Saudis. He reiterated that Pakistan’s policy on the Syrian conflict stood unchanged, that Pakistan-made arms will not be used in any conflict and that Islamabad supports international efforts to find a peaceful Syria-led and inclusive solution being pursued under the Geneva peace process. His assurance, by and large, appeared to satisfy the concerns of opposition parties, especially the statement that the Saudi gift is not in exchange for any direct meddling by Pakistan in Syria. We welcome this position. However, until a fuller explanation is made, we cannot but be mystified by the question as to why Riyadh will just give away a staggering sum to Islamabad without demanding anything in return. This is something that needs more clarification, if the government wants to put at rest the conspiracy theories surrounding the cash handout.

@M.Faisal: One of the strongest possibilities of all. But hey, conspiracy theories have to be fed and kept alive. This money shall go back the same way it came. It was only meant to adore our begging bowl for credit lenders.
Lets hope for good.
@M.Faisal: ".. And why should we interfere in some one else matter..". Because that's exactly what your government is quite good at. Taking partly from what Ms. Tarar has said previously- Pakistan sambhala jaa nahin raha hai, baki sari dunya ko sambhalne chale hain.
@optimist: Amazingly Saudis increase Haj/umrah charges than normal. What a hypocracy?
Why does Saudi Arabia need Pakistan support on Syria? They don't need Pakistan to purchase weapons, Pakistan has little diplomatic clout, and surely Pakistan isn't dumb enough to send troops.
Why people of Pakistan do not understand,,, It is just relocation of money from one territory to another, Pakistan Government is not going to use this money for any purpose, Its only support to help boost our Foreign reserves, only crack head can think of sending Pak Army to Syria, that is more needed here.. And why should we interfere in some one else matter..
Pakistan is on a suicide mission and in the process it is setting fire to the entire neighborhood. The government and all their spokespersons are intentionally saying that Pakistan is not supplying any arms. Yes, Pakistan is not supplying any arms. The total arms export of Pakistan is a very tiny amount. Not sure of the amount but guess about $100 million at the max. per year. Pakistan is in no way to supply $1.5 billion arms. By talking about arms supply, Pakistan is trying to divert and avoid questions on the real issue which is supply of army. They think that all others are fools to believe what the government says. In the long run, it will also affect Pakistanis working in KSA and other gulf countries. They will be targeted there and the Arabs will not bother to protect them.
Those liberals who were asking 'what has Saudia given us. Only US gives us'.. Now when the money is here, again they are not happy. . Please also question strings attached to US aid...
If it smells like it, if looks like it... it probably is 'it".
So despite the honourable Minister's denials - your govt sold itself off for $1.5 billion! There is, as they say, 'No Free Lunch'.
Of course there were no strings attached. Strings only come if the donation is in the 50 to 200 million dollar range. Aid of $1.5 billion magnitude comes with a rope or a chain.
P.S. This out of the blue grant far exceeds Saudi aid during both the earthquake and floods combined. Go figure.
