KARACHI: The Sindh government will establish the Thar Development Corporation to cope with the drought-like situation in the district, announced Sharjeel Memon, the minister for information, archives and local government.

Speaking to media, he said that relief work was being conducted in all areas of Tharparkar in a transparent manner. "A special development package will also be announced for the district soon," he said adding that the ongoing developments in Tharparkar will be accelerated.

The minister contradicted reports about delayed, curtailed and poorly-managed relief work and said the CM was personally overseeing such relief work by visiting Tharparkar every other day.

He warned the bureaucracy to perform their duties honestly and efficiently, otherwise cases would be lodged against them. "The government is taking care of the people of Tharparkar and will not leave them alone in this difficult time," he added.

There is no need to create any department for the development of Thar, which is not only the area that need deserve and attention. There are other parts of Sindh, which also face the drought like situation, i.e. KAACHO in Dadu, Kohistan and a large pockets of Khairpur Mirs, Badin and Sanghar bordering with India. The only solution is to strengthen the Rural Development Department of the Government of Sindh, which can cater for the needs of these areas, as the creation of another department will be nothing but a burden on the exchequer of Sindh.
