Hand-me-down: Detainee sent into police remand after 90 days

KARACHI: A man who was detained by the Rangers for 90 days over his alleged involvement in targeted killings and extortion was presented on Friday before an anti-terrorism court by the police in a double murder case.

According to the police, Rangers had presented the suspect before the court to inform the judge about his 90-day preventive detention for interrogation after his arrest.

At that time, the court was informed that the paramilitary force had 'credible information' about his alleged involvement in targeted killing, extortion and other offences that fall under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997.

According to the police, the man confessed, while in detention, to his alleged involvement in a double murder case.

The police claimed that the suspect confessed to killing two men, Muhammad Ali and Noman, in Paan Mandi on January 24, 2012.

A case, No.12/2012, was registered under sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with section 7 of the ATA at the Risala police station.

After the Rangers handed over the suspect to the police, they produced him before the court and requested a remand for interrogation in the murder case. The ATC-III awarded physical custody remand of the suspect to the police till March 10.
