KARACHI:

The district and sessions judge South, Abdul Qudoos Memon, sentenced on Thursday three men to imprisonment for 32 years in a case pertaining to the murder of Barrister Muhammad Murtaza Chinoy.

The barrister was shot dead when armed men barged into his Zamzama Office in Clifton on August 25, 2011. Following the murder, the police had arrested three suspects, including a peon, Naveed John, working with the barrister for over a year.

The police said that John had confessed that he had devised a plan with his friends, Zahid and Sajid, to rob the lawyer’s office. The men had held the barrister hostage at gunpoint and shot him dead when he put up a fight, said the police, adding that looted valuables were also recovered from the suspects’ possession.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on each and, in case of non-payment, the convicts would have to serve an additional two years in imprisonment. The accused were remanded back to the prison to serve out the sentence.
