According to police, the woman, Bisma, killed the children following an argument with her husband over financial issues and has confessed to the crime.
The police, after recovering bodies of the minors, registered an FIR against the couple on charges of murder.
According to the FIR, Sunny and his wife Bisma were crying loudly in their room on Tuesday night at 3am. Family members reached the room and found bodies of their children lying on the ground near the weeping couple.
Both connived the death of the children, the FIR said.
However, Inspector Imran Yasin told The Express Tribune that the mother of the children has confessed and the father had no role in their deaths.
He quoted her as saying that she killed them because of poverty as their father was not earning enough income.
The inspector added that the father was a drug addict and did not have a job.
Revealing the mother's modus operandi, he said they removed a rope from the neck of the baby boy while the girl had her hands and feet tied with rope when they recovered her body.
The inspector said Bisma killed the baby boy by strangulating him and threw the daughter in a water tub after tying her hands and feet.
When asked, the IO said the man was also present in the room when his wife was killing the children but he did not stop her.
He said the accused woman claimed that her husband used to beat her since they got married nearly four years back. According to the IO, the woman said the children had been not fed for three days.
The young mother stated they had been trying to make ends meet by selling the gold which her parents had given her at her marriage. She said they also started a motorcycle rental shop but her husband had sold all motorcycles instead of running the business.
After registering the FIR, the police have shifted the bodies to the mortuary for autopsy, the IO added.

Now she says that her in laws are involved in prostitution and were forcing her too. . Why blame Punjab govt? Was the govt supposed to provide drugs to her husband for free?
Its a shame that in our society no one is willing to take responsibilty for their actions....if the woman had the money she would be sane but only lack of money turned her insane...tat man seemed more disable who was sleeping nearby couldnt hear the cries of kids and rest of the family were definitely completely innocent and cluless.how cruel how shameless how much more irresponsible our society can get
The mother was under a lot of stress and maybe chronically depressed as well. Her making any decisions with a clear and sound mind was not to be expected. It is sad that the situation got that bad.
I believe Pakistan is the country which generates huge amount of charity , there are organizations out there to provide free food , shelter and education .There is so much help available that murdering for hunger and poverty doesn't seem right reason.
This couple might have abducted the children, DNA test must be done to find out if she is the actual mother.
These children might have been abducted as infants as I don't see how a mother can kill its own children except snakes or some other species of animals (few).
Or the couple might have killed some other people like serial killers before as its not easy for someone to kill a human and stay calm as the picture says above.
This also speaks of the disregard of each other's well-being. What is colossally upsetting is that the " family members" could hear the cries of the "convicted" parents, but couldn't testify for the couple's monetary condition to be that poor that they killed their own children.
What does this speak for the "alleged" joint family system which the harbinger of peace and monetary support for a lot of social pundits ? How is anyone of the same family less responsible in the face of this crime?
This might also be an interesting research assignment for the psychologists studying postnatal depression, which in this case was compounded because of sheer apathy of the on-lookers aka in-laws and husband's inability to support her.
Whatever the reasons are, it speaks for the collective mental anarchy where we are heading.

Husband is a drug addict, wife cannot go out and work because of religious traditions and family honours. What can a woman do with starving children.

It is the father who should be blamed. He was responsible to provide for the family but being a drug addict, he was living off on his wife's jewelry.

What the heck...why didnt they hand their children to Edhi center or any other similar institution.... Everyone knows about such programs, there is no excuse to this. This case should be thoroughly investigated. Ridiculous society.
I think our media (both print and electronic) have again gone overboard in this case. It was not just poverty but additional facts like a drug addict husband, fued leading to fist fight between the lady's father and huband and dispute about property that led her to commit this hienous act. They were not that poor as they own the property where they are living. Besides our society has not deteriorated that much that people might die of hunger and no one is willing to feed them.
The man should be punished severely since he drove the wife to insanity. A US mother killed her five children under such a mental disease. This woman was either temporarily driven mad or had a stone in her chest, not a heart. If she could think for a few seconds, she could have asked the neighbors for food for children. I am certain that in spite of the Pakistan conditions, the people are not heartless and they would have helped her. Oh how I mourn for those babies who could have been given to childless couple from Edhi Center. One such friend has adopted a boy and girl from Edhi Center and they are adored and cared for and are now going to a good school. Please Hamza Shahbaz, why dont you think of some concrete steps to eliminate poverty and open call centers for desperate mothers like this one rather than making trivial world records? This has put us Pakistanis all over the world to shame. Please save other children from meeting such a tragic end- they did not ask to be born.
Its not about poverty but about psycho mind. Only a psychotic person can do such a thing.
She was clearly crazy. The couple lived in Johar Town in a joint family, were clearly middle class, and the woman took her children's lives after a fight with their father over money and how he wasn't making enough. What about that is traceable to the Shareefs or to the country's economic conditions? Granted there's soul-crushing poverty in Pakistan, but if killing their children were easier for mothers than taking a job themselves, this would happen in every household. Lets focus on mental health as well as poverty here.

Speechless.....!How can a mother do this?...whatever the circumstances be...now both the parents should be hanged till death.since ...they could have handed the kids to the Edhi centre or any other institution.

Talking about limits to having one children that sounds fair isnt it, considering in one part of the city, there is the only child of the rich parents who has as much to eat and drink as 10 children would have.. and down there somewhere the mother kills her children cuz she cannot tolerate the hunger on their faces..
