Amid tight security: PM unveils Tarbela extension project

The premier unveils the plaque of the project amid tight security and boycott by the local media.

HARIPUR: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday launched the much-awaited fourth extension of Tarbela Dam. He was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and federal ministers. The premier unveiled the plaque of the project amid tight security and boycott by the local media. Wapda Chairman Syed Raghib Ali Shah said the $342 million project would add up 410MW of electricity to the national grid within the next three and a half years. Speaking on this occasion the premier asked Wapda to ensure the completion of two projects by 2017 so that the power crisis could be mitigated. The local media was not allowed to attend the ceremony.
