KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) adjourned the hearing of several constitutional petitions and suits regarding alleged illegal privatisation of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquified Natural Gas (NGL) production units.

The case was adjourned till November 8 after a statement by the defendants that the Oil and Gas Development Corporation (OGDCL) was all set to undergo structural changes and that the privatisation programme has been abandoned.

The cases came up before a bench of SHC headed by Justice Mushir Alam on Monday.

The counsel stated that in view of the policy changes, the pending applications might have become unnecessary.

The  court said all counsels are expected to inform the court on the present status of each litigation at the next hearing.

The petitions were filed by a shareholder of OGDCL, Zafar Mehmood Malik, and others including Syed Mazahir Ali Akbar, Petrosin Ravi Industries and Petrosin Corporation.

The respondents cited are Secretary Petroleum and Natural Resources, OGDCL, Privatisation Commission, Jamshoro Joint Venture Company Limited and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited. The petitioners maintained that OGDCL is handing over the rights of production of LPG and NGL to private companies without approval from Council of Common Interest (CCI) bypassing the privatisation commission, which will adversely affect the LPG sector and the public at large.
