DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Unidentified people attacked a polio team in the Parwa tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday, Express News reported.

An officer providing security to the vaccination team was injured when the unidentified persons opened fire.

Polio teams frequently come under attack in the country as the authorities struggle to ensure an end to the crippling virus.

Just yesterday, two officers providing security to a polio team were injured in an explosion near Shalman Road in Khyber Agency. The injured officers were shifted to a nearby hospital, while the polio team remained unhurt.

Despite the threat, the government had said on February 2 that it inoculated around 0.4 million children against nine diseases, including polio, in 45 union councils of Peshawar.

However, over 9,000 teachers of the district had refused to take part in the campaign citing low wages and security concerns.
