ISLAMABAD:

A day after The Express Tribune’s news report on the need for an FIA overhaul was published, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar took measures to improve the performance of the country’s top investigation agency.

On Thursday, he suspended the whole staff of the FIA working at the Islamabad Airport as they let two foreigners enter the Benazir International Airport without proper documentation.

The FIA team deputed at the airport allowed two women to enter the airport premises without proper documentation and a special team will investigate the matter and submit its report to interior minister within two business days.

Those who are sluggish and unproductive will be removed from service, the minister warned.

“All of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will be revamped and it would have to deliver now,” said an official of interior ministry.

It was reported in the news item that more than 2,114 – about 25.5% – vacant posts in various wings of the investigation agency cast doubt over the performance of the agency that is currently dealing with dozens of high-profile cases.

In reaction, the minister said that the officers who were not following rotation policy will be sent back to their parent departments. This government will not let anyone interfere in FIA’s affairs, and it is now the responsibility of this force to perform its national duty fairly, he added.

The interior minister appreciated the news published in The Express Tribune for highlighting issues related to the investigating agency.

@Kiran Khan:

Interior Ministry is the head of FIA. Nisar himself is responsible for all the people on ECL fo non justified reasons.

What about the FIA thugs who are putting people's names on ECL just to settle personal scores? Unless you are convicted of an offense or facing a crime like murder or treason, your name should not be on the ECL. Currently, there are 100s of names of people on ECL placed by the FIA themselves to harass and blackmail innocent people. FIA has also placed names of innocent retired officers and private sector people in FIRs to extract money from them. I would urge the Interior Minister to immediately refresh the ECL list, and justify why each person who is on the ECL, is there to begin with. I can guarantee the majority of people on the list are all there for no valid reason. This is a clear violation of law and basic decency.
