FAISALABAD: Tens of thousands of trees are being cut for the packaging of fruits, vegetables and grains, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) said on Saturday. He said environmentally friendly packing could reduce the damage. He said the UAF and Packages Ltd would jointly develop packaging materials to benefit consumers as well as farmers. Vice Chancellor Iqrar Ahmad Khan was presiding over a meeting with Hassan Asif from Packages Limited and other university professors. Khan directed the Department of Entomology and the Institute of Horticultural Sciences to establish a lab to develop the packing material. Asif said post-harvest losses in banana production had been as high as 50 per cent. He said Packages had devised a mechanism to reduce losses to 10 per cent. He said post-harvest losses were a major obstacle to achieving the full potential of the agricultural sector.
