KARACHI: A candidate for upcoming local bodies elections was killed while his brother and a security guard were wounded in a bomb attack in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi on Tuesday night.

Witnesses told The Express Tribune that at least two armed men riding a motorcycle threw explosive material at Wajahat Hussain Naqvi’s car near Karachi University and escaped.

The resultant explosion killed Naqvi on the spot, while his brother Ali Naqvi and a security guard were wounded. Their driver managed to drive to the Aga Khan Hospital.

Police have so far been unable to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

SHO Hayat Abbasi said that deceased was the area manager of Allied Bank Limited and also the chairman of Shia Matami Anjuman-e-Makhdooma Konain, adding that he was on his way to his residence in New Rizvia Society when armed motorcyclists attacked him with a locally made low-intensity bomb.

In a press statement, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain expressed grief over the attack and said that the deceased had filed his nomination paper to contest upcoming local bodies’ election from an MQM ticket.

Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Maulana Dedar Ali Jalbani and his guard were also killed at the same place last year.
