ISLAMABAD:

President Mamnoon Hussain said on Monday that the grant of the Generalised System of Preference (GSP) Plus status to Pakistan has demonstrated the trust and confidence of the European Union (EU) in the quality and competitiveness of the country’s goods and products.

He expressed confidence that the status, which will remain effective from January 2014 to 2017, will give impetus to the government’s efforts for steering the economy towards the path of revival and stability.

The president was speaking at a meeting with a group of ambassadors from European countries led by EU Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark.

Welcoming the ambassadors, the president thanked them for their continued support and assistance to Pakistan. He also thanked Wigemark for his positive role in Pakistan’s inclusion in the scheme and strengthening Pakistan-EU relations.

He said the GSP Plus Scheme would not only help boost Pakistan’s exports to the EU, but will also strengthen its economy through greater trade, increased economic activities and creating employment opportunities for its people.

He reiterated the government’s commitment towards good governance and introducing fiscal measures to revive and stabilise the country’s economy.

EU Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark and the delegation assured support and assistance of the EU and its member countries to Pakistan.
