PESHAWAR:

Representative bodies of journalists in Peshawar boycotted proceedings of the provincial assembly and police activities on Saturday, owing to the thrashing of a fellow journalist at the assembly’s premises on Friday.

Office bearers of Peshawar Press Club and Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) passed a unanimous resolution during a general body meeting of journalists stating initiation of demonstrations across the province.

The meeting also decided to observe January 30 as a “Black Day” against attacks on media personnel in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and on Express News personnel in Karachi recently.

Press club’s president Nasir Hussain said the attitude of police officials does not reflect their professionalism and the torture of Mohammad Naeem, senior vice president of KhUJ, on Friday was not the first incident of its kind. He deplored the conditions under which journalists have to carry out their professional duties.

The union’s president, Nisar Mehmud, said a government representative had assured them of disciplinary action against police official but the boycott of assembly and police news will continue till justice is actually delivered.

Later, journalists took out a protest rally from the press club and gathered near Governor House, chanting slogans against the government and police personnel.
