ISLAMABAD:

The government seems to have come out of hibernation regarding the state of affairs at Higher Education Commission and has notified a six-member search committee for the selection of its head after the post’s status was challenged in the Islamabad High Court.

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Saturday notified the committee and sent the names to the Ministry of Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education (ETS) .

Former HEC head Dr Attaur Rehman had sought the court’s help in pushing the government to appoint a full-time HEC chief.

The contract of its former head Javaid Laghari expired last August. Later, the government nominated University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar VC Imtiaz Hussain Gilani its acting chief.

IHC judge Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui on January 6 ordered the government to appoint a new chairman before February 12.

The post was advertised in newspapers on Sunday and education ministry officials informed the applications will be accepted till January 22. List of shortlisted candidates will be approved by the PM before February 12, they added.
