A man arrested by the Sabzi Mandi police on Friday for publicly displaying an unlicensed weapon has been sent on a 14-day judicial remand, the police said.
According to the police, a bystander saw Zar Khan sitting inside a Toyota Surf near the Sabzi Mandi market area with an AK-47 and complained to the police.
Sabzi Mandi Assistant Sub-Inspector Asim Ghaffar said that after the police were alerted and went to question Khan, the latter confidently produced an arms licence for the weapon. But the licence had expired, Ghaffar said.
The police also seized 104 rounds of ammunition from Khan’s car.
According to the police official, Section 144 is currently in place in the federal capital and public display of any weapon — licensed or unlicensed — is prohibited.
Khan, a resident of Rawalpindi, and his driver were both booked.
On Saturday, Khan was sent to Adiala jail on judicial remand. The police said they would produce the suspect in the court in the next few days.
