KARACHI:

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has requested the election commission to postpone the allotment of party symbols to the candidates contesting the local government elections till the matter is finally decided by the Supreme Court.

In a letter written to the chief election commissioner on Saturday, PPP secretary-general, Sindh, Taj Haider said, “Sindh High Court (SHC) has declared the delimitation invalid giving a decision against the candidates contesting on panels.”

He said the Sindh government has challenged the SHC decision in the apex court, which has fixed January 27 for the hearing. In this situation, the allotment of symbols will be a futile exercise, he said, adding that all the candidates had submitted their nomination papers on the new delimitation as well as on the panel-basis. “It is the discretion of the apex court that may set aside the SHC decision or uphold it,” he said.
