Family court: Divorce to proceed after woman verifies faith

Man claimed his wife had pretended to be a Muslim at the time of their marriage but was in fact an Ahmadi.

LAHORE:

A man on Monday withdrew his petition to stop proceedings for dissolution of marriage until his wife’s faith had been verified, after his wife said she was not Ahmadi in a statement in court.

Huma Shabbir had filed for dissolution of marriage and recovery of dowry. Her husband, Syed Shabbir Ahmad, had then filed an application asking the court to stop proceedings in the case until his wife’s faith could be established.

He claimed that she had pretended to be a Muslim at the time of their marriage but was in fact an Ahmadi.

Family Judge Muhammad Rashid directed the couple to appear before the court in person to record their statements.

Shabbir stated that she was not an Ahmadi and that she considered Mirza Ghulam Ahmed a non-Muslim.

The judge then granted a separation, and summoned evidence regarding dowry on February 15.
