“This jalsa means a new life for us workers,” said Muhammad Arshad excitedly, clutching a party flag in one hand and holding his son with the other. Making his way through the huge crowd, he shouted, “Today is the start of a revolution,” as a bunch of young men erupted into ‘Jeay Altaf’ slogans.
On Sunday, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) did all it could to justify its claims of hosting the biggest congregation in Pakistan’s political history as part of its campaign for the upcoming local bodies elections.
The venue chosen for the ‘grand jalsa’ was not the grounds near the party’s headquarters at ‘Nine-Zero’, but the one near Aladin Park, which was flooded with thousands of party supporters, while hundreds more choked the main roads.
For the party workers, a congregation on such a grand scale, being held after ages, was seen as a new beginning in the party - which is said to be faced by internal rifts, Scotland Yard’s investigations on Altaf Hussain and senior party leaders unofficially bidding goodbye.
Qamar Sultana, who had come in a bus loaded with 200 people from New Karachi felt ecstatic. “I have been an MQM voter since the year 2000. Such gatherings renew our faith that the party is still here for us.” She wanted the local bodies elections to be held as soon as possible. “Our area is filled with garbage and is plagued by other civic issues,” she complained.
In another row of the enclosure, set up exclusively for women and children, Afshan related that she completed all her household chores early in the morning to be on time for the event. Wrapped in sweaters and shawls, she asserted that neither the cold weather nor the fear of attacks could have stopped her from coming.
Former activists of other parties, such as Farahnaz, remarked that the congregation was very well-organised. ‘I never saw such discipline in [other] rallies. The common workers are getting so much respect here.”
Demand for new province
While Altaf Hussain’s controversial statement demanding a separate province in Hyderabad sparked protest and outrage here the demand received a gracious welcome. A college teacher, Adnan Babar, said that the move for a province for the Urdu-speaking people was not unjust. “You see, there is no equal distribution in jobs. Sindhis are preferred over us. We are facing the worst law and order situation,” said the resident of Buffer Zone. Even Chacha MQM, the elderly white-bearded man, who dresses up in kurta pyjama in hues of the party flags exclaimed, “We own the idea of a separate province. Other parties should also support the move,” came his croaky voice. His throat was sore after raising slogans for the last three days.
The grand preparation
The location set for the grand congregation was the ground in Gulshan-e-Iqbal where the Sunday and Wednesday Bazaar is held every week. This week, instead of the tables, more than 40,000 chairs were laid. People came to the venue in buses which were stopped near Millenium Mall. Young party activists, wearing orange caps, stopped cars and check the people before letting them pass. All shops in the area remained closed.
Closer to the venue, senior activists watched on as every man, woman and child walked in through the security gates.
More than 1,500 workers were present in the ground as part of the party’s own security, keeping a watchful eye on the participants through their black shades. In addition to this, a heavy contingent of law enforcement personnel, including police and Rangers, patrolled the area. A stage, 20-by-80 feet, was set up for the party’s leaders to address and welcome the chief Altaf Hussain, who was to address the gathering by telephone.

@Ahmed - Karachi: Yes we want all the 'goons' back into action who were working under Kamal administration, SINDH 2, is happy with the 'goons' who own the place and deliver
Times have changed. PPP is much different then at the time of ZAB’s execution. Do not underrate it. Look what happened in Karachi as a reaction to the assassination of BB. Realistic assessments are necessary for peace. A velvet creation of Sindh 2 might not be possible. So the dilemma and the challenge is: how to get the urban Sindh its rights and keep the peace as well. Think about it.
@Arzoo: I am impressed by your intellectual prowess. But sometimes, I wonder if you have one-sided views.
Sindh 2 South Sindh Is Already Official Now. It's Only Required To Be Declared By A Government Notification As A Formality.
Separate province is the fundamental and constitutional right of Urdu Speaking and we [Urdu speaking] support the SINDH-II formula.
I have trouble deciding who will be the Chief minister of Sindh II, any thoughts
Some contributers in this forum are so unintellectual and so hateful of Altaf Hussain and its MQM that they can't read between the lines. He read out the Superme courts verdict to safeguard people of Sindh from vederashai and tyranny culture of the PPP. MQM is playing the right politics as the average person would see Altaf Hussain trying to devide when he is not, it is called Communication Persuation, you bargain hard to achieve what is best. Think before you spew hate - it is against Islam. You need people like Altaf to shut the mouths of those who oppose the genuine concerns of people.
Great jalsa! Sindh II zindabad
@Asad K Shaikh..I live in Gulistan-e-Jauhar...all shops and market were open...
@Ozymandias: Sorry, but this is a stupid comment. Salams
I do not support Altaf due to his disturbing personality and don't even consider him worth a leader. But I support MQM and will always, since they alone are the true voice of Urban Sindh..... Sindh-2 all the way !!!!
Irony is that Altaf Hussain was the guy who thought Indo-Pak partition was the worst thing that happened. Now he is asking for a separate province because of same conditions.
Last evening enabled a renewed belief and confidence in the wisdom, truth, depth, richness and all inclusive nature of the message of a great leader.
For those who think the crowd was forcefully pulled in, I live in Jauher, the jalsa was a pain due to the noise, but no I wasn't forcefully dragged out of my house. I was requested though a few days ago to attend, but nothing after that and no I did not attend and am still alive.
Oh ofcourse a friend of friend of friend of mine was forcefully kidnapped from Azad Kashmir and brought in to the jalsa in Karachi.
Get a life and face the reality.
Kudos to MQM for once again speaking the hearts of Urban Sindh. Many parties claim to be our representatives but nobody besides MQM, actually does something. SHC decision is a prime example, thanks to MQM; our rights have not been sabotaged as PPP intended to.
If one goes to interior Sindh, it seems like you have traveled 150 years back in history. And then look at Bilawal House, and residences of Zulfiqar Mirza and other Sindhi feudals in Karachi and you will start realizing what is happening. I do not want to name names; but look around and you will see most of their kids going through medical colleges and engineering colleges and then moving abroad. The urban residents of Sindh seems to change this situation. This is a beginning. There is no harm in creating new provinces as this is the need of the hour. It should not be done at the expense of the rural areas. Rural areas should flourish and their economy should grow too because they supply all the foodstuff to the urban areas. Urban areas will increasingly move cottage industries to rural areas to benefit from lower labor and infrastructure costs. For that to happen, rural areas has to have roads, transportation, water, gas, and electricity. For that to happen they need to get rid of their feudals. Or, it's all a dream.
@Ahmed - Karachi: Time to stop, people cannot be forced boarded for 30 long years, non-sense
People are forcefully boarded on to buses and taken to the venue. This is not show of power but in fact it's misuse. And sad to see how a party that claims itself a representation of the poor treats the poor like animals. Nearby shops had to be closed who's gonna put bread on the table for those who live off by earning everyday??? I'm a muhajir but i believe a separate province would give the MQM the power to do this day every single day... Not something i would want.
It was great example of discipline shown by MQM and I completely agree with the facts written above even I support separate province for Urdu Speaking
so this means Canadian tahir ul qadri revolution slogan have now been hijacked by Britisher Altaf Hussain.
MQM has raised hopes like never before and taken on, a lot of responsibility to get all of it right. Hope they are able to gain the necessary authority

Such misguided, brainwashed people.
MQM workers came an closed down shops in our area (Gulistan-e-Jauhar) and took the shopkeepers with them to listen to Altaf's rants at Aladdin park. This is how the grounds fill every time.
