The policemen were guarding a bakery in Baldia Town which had received extortion chits in the past. The shop was previously attacked with hand grenades as the owner did not give money to the extortionists.
In another incident of violence, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate for local bodies election Qari Jafar was killed in the Rasheedabad area.
Two others were shot dead in the Mawach Goth area of the city, while another sustained injuries.
On January 4, at least 17 people lost their lives in the wave of violence that gripped the city. Three members of the Shia community, two seminary students and two police officials, were among the victims.
The two policemen – head constable Lal Haleem and constable Younus – were killed while another constable, Kamran, was injured when armed motorcyclists opened fire at a police mobile in Pirabad.
Operation
Rangers personnel today arrested four target killers and an extortionist during a security operation in the city.
The officers also seized a huge amount of arms from their possession.
According to the Rangers spokesperson, the target killers belong to a political party and have admitted to many killings.
The Rangers spokesperson had earlier said that the current spike in sectarian killings is a conspiracy to disrupt the law and order in the city and Rangers have some leads that a political party may be behind them.

@javed: Why are you dragging the 1971 War into this? At that time Pakistan was lead by a Pashtun President Yahya Khan and another Pashtun General Niazi was fighting in the East. No matter the ethnicity of any general, the leadership let internal problems foment. Yes you want to celebrate how India took advantage of internal strife in Pakistan and that Pakistan had to fight with one hand tied behind its hand and lost. The soldiers were brave but the leaders allowed the opponent taking advantage of the civil war on the ground. So you want to say India should take advantage of the civil discord on the ground in Karachi and cause trouble in the internal affairs of Pakistan? Try to help Karachi by promoting understanding instead of hate.

As long as the master mind and the bosses of their criminals are not arrested, these killing will some how continues to bleed the city. Who are handlers and what are motive behind this targeted killing need to be rooted out. These arrest is a temporary arrangement.

It is sad that these people come here and talk about cowardice and crooks from Punjab. My friend are you telling me that MQM is made up by Punabis? It is unfortunate how people do not see the root of the problem. If you treat a Pakistani as a Pakistani, and not as a Sindhi, Shia, Karachite, etc; you will find that people actually lean towards being part of a pack rather than be pushed into one corner and be considered as outsiders. Fact is that Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan, the most economically important city of Pakistan, the one city that competes with the rest of Pakistan put together. I'm afraid that it's geographical importance is too great for us and its skilled human resources priceless to pakistans existence. Lets stop beating around the bushes and figure out how to improve it as a city and as a resource.
I have only seen hatred. And this is what hurts me the most. And here i consider everyone from every part of Pakistan as a brother. Sad isnt it. Now take your hatred and feed it to your kids so that we have yet another generation of misinformation and malign. Lets break this country into the tiny bits it deserves to be in.
In 1971 as India attacked Pakistan and bombed day and night our Karachi port, I realized that I lived in a city of cowards. Just imagine the railway station was overpacked with panicked families all leaving Karachi towards............QUETTA! Those days any crook from Punjab could come to Karachi and establish himself as a Dadda of his locality, the results we see today in this organised criminality.
If Pakistan ever breaks up, it'll be of their own doing and not the result of imagined foreign conspiracies hatched up in New Delhi, Kabul, Tel Aviv and Washington.
