Year-end statistics: In 2013, crime surges in the capital

Heinous crime witnessed an increase of 20 to 25 per cent during 2013. During the year, in 1,400 cases of theft, burglary, and other related crimes, people were deprived of Rs700 million worth of valuables.


Meanwhile, the police registered 7,500 cases in all, against the 6,500 registered in 2012.

This year, 143 people were murdered in the Federal Capital against 123 killed in 2012.

In 2013, car and motorbike thefts also witnessed significant increases. During 2013, 600 citizens were deprived of their cars, while 110 motorbikes were also lifted.

During 2013, some 120 people died in road accidents almost the same as last year, when 126 people died on the road.

Attempted murders also saw an increase, with 191 such cases registered against 120 the previous year.

Proclaimed offenders

In 2013, the police managed to arrest only 947 proclaimed offenders out of over 4,000. In addition, they claimed to have recovered 175 stolen cars, 40 motorbikes and other valuable worth Rs370 million. The police also claimed that it provided security to 500 processions and other events in the federal capital.

Arrests

During the year police arrested 7,729 people for their alleged involvement in various crimes.

Investigations

Out of 7,500 cases, the police managed to complete investigations of only 4,553. As it could not complete investigations of 2,947 cases, the challans for these were not submitted before the relevant courts. Also, despite the passage of five years, the Islamabad police has still failed to recover its missing Inspector, Rana Pervez.
