On the eve of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's protest to demolish the wall surrounding the Bilawal House, the Sindh government opened one side of the thoroughfare for the public, after which tension erupted between the PTI and Pakistan Peoples Party's workers.
On Friday evening, PTI's MNA Arif Alvi and MPA Khurram Sher Zaman along with party workers gathered near the wall. As news spread of their demonstration today [Sunday] to demolish the wall, one side of the thoroughfare was opened, surprising commuters who've seen it closed for the past five years. Vehicles, however, could not pass through the road, which was being cleaned by sweepers.
When workers of PPP also arrived at the site, the situation turned tense as some people pushed back Alvi and others hit Zaman's car. Before things could get out of control, the PTI leaders left the site. A large number of police officials had also turned up to avert any clash between the workers of the two political parties.
According to Alvi, who won the NA-250 constituency in the general elections, they wanted their protest to remain peaceful and wanted to avoid any confrontation, which is why they left the site. "We are glad that one side of the road has opened but we want the entire road to be available to the commuters, as directed by the Sindh High Court on September 4. As an MNA of the area, I want to go on the road and inspect which walls should be demolished but they are stopping me," he said while talking to The Express Tribune. According to him, new containers had been erected near Boat Basin to create an environment of confrontation. "This is not a political stunt. I have no issue with tight security for the former president, but we won't let roads be closed and walls be built at the cost of civilians' rights. Even embassies in the city are not protected like this fortress."
Speaking about the demonstration today at Bilawal Chowrangi, Alvi said that the protest is not only for one day but will continue till the walls are brought down and the road leading to Bilawal House is opened for commuters.
Workers of the PPP, however, consider opening the roads as a threat to the safety of their leaders. Carrying party flags and chanting 'Naray Naray Bhutto, Jiyay Jiyay Bhutto', they said that by asking to reopen the roads, PTI was paving way for the Taliban to attack Bilawal House. "PTI is employing political tactics in our area. We came to show support with our leaders," said Najmi Alam of the PPP. "They were thinking that our workers won't be here to stand up to them but they were wrong."
According to DC South Mustafa Jamal Qazi, they had asked for a month's time to open one side of the road because they wanted to put up new cameras and lights. He assured that the other side would be opened soon as well.
PTI has asked supporters of the movement to gather at the Bilawal Chowrangi at 1pm to demolish the wall. Party leaders are also expected to address a press conference in the afternoon.

im sorry but how much time does bhutto or bilawal even spend in this house ? they have no right to ruin everyones lives all year round when they merely spend a few days at this place. that too they have underground rooms for security. i know some people who built that place. its completely bomb proof. this wall is ridiculous. especially since they dont even LIVE in that place unless they need to attend a meeting. It should be removed. the commoners use it more than them, clearly.
@ Immature leader, immature provincial leadership, why didnt PTI come out against SLGA, the real threat faced by Karachites, a powerful mayor can deal with all the trivial, such as bringing a wall down. All PTI has done has trained the nation, to go the Dharna way, no matter what the issue is, its time that there is some legislation done against these DHARNA SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
What PPP sowed for MQM will haunt them for long time. Sooner or later sindh PPP will have to face opposition from ANP too, which was heartily suppored by PPP sindh against MQM.
@Mirza: Actually just as a reminder to you the matter had already been adjudicated and ruling passed by the courts against the fortified walls surrounding Bilawal House. The area covered by the wall is a Public property and it had been illegally encroached in the name of Billawal House security at the cost of public inconvenience and perils for years. It's a blatant disregard of tax payers sensitivities. Please prevent personal loyalties from impeding fair judgements. By the way I am not a PTI supporter as you may think.
@Mirza: Let's not moralize these issues, please. Look around you. What do you see? A plethora of problems created by the PPP or not?
Viva! Bravo! Jeeaaay PTI, Imran Khan, and Arif Alvi. The PPP only understands the language of 'loot khasoot' and violating Sindh High Court decisions. If they are 'awam dost, then in the previous five years they would have done immense development in Sindh province. 'What poor democrats these PPPwalas are. And they claim to be the defenders of freedom and human rights. Haaahh!!! Jeeaaay PTI, Imran Khan, and Arif Alvi. Salams
Karachi can only function if it becomes a city-state, sooner or later people will realize that and have the courage to demand the much needed administrative change
@sabi:
Ahem. That is comparing oranges and apples. PTI actions are backed by court decisions and a sitting National Assembly member.

That is good, and very good. Bilawal House is not entitled to controle and hold the whole city and make people's life misreble.Yes, only people can teach them how to live as a citizen of Pakistan. This country does not belong to Bhutto family or someone else, gone the days are when they cpatured property and there was no accountabilty. Thank you media and democracy.
Why not ask Bilawal Zardari if he will follow courts order and let the wall be demolished?
how is PTI's vigilante politics any different from the lal masjid brigade? If there is a Sindh high court order, let the police implement it.
PPP deliberately sent its so called jiyalas to altercate with PTI workers.
This reminds me of students of jamia hafsa Islamabad carrying sticks on the streets shutting video shops to end fahashi. This is naya Pakistan of IK. Lo and behold!
Thats the change we asked for!! Go pti go!
The entire surrounding road had been blocked by PPPP for years, although roads are public properties. And we say Pakistan is gradually swaying away from the Jaagir System? My college is near that area and just because of this blockade I have to drive through a longer path. As far as security issues go, Mr. 10 percent or even his son for that matter stay abroad 90 percent of the time, so who are we protecting exactly? Plus we all know for a fact how shady that area around Bilawal House is, kidnappings, rape....I do not want to go on.
I hope ET stops being biased and actually publishes my comment. Peace.
At least the partial opening of the road is (partial) success for the residents of Clifton and other adjoining areas passing through Block-2. The PPP jiyalas must not forget that 70 Clifton used to be (and is still) on the most secured road in old Clifton yet Murtaza Bhutto died in a cold blooded murder in August1996 and could not even reach the Hospital (then a few yards away). Asif Ali Zardari and his children spend most of their time in Dubai. These days they are here only to attend the 6th barsi (death anniversary) of Benazir Bhutto. The Zardari-Bhuttos might not be impacted but the road closure has definitely made the life miserable for millions of citizens of Clifton. The High Court had directed removal of encroachments long ago but the provincial government of PPP has never been interested in implementing the orders of the judiciary.

It is ironic that these parties are resorting to street shows rather than raise these questions in the parliament. Of course all decisions of courts be implemented by not by vigilante justice.
PTI Zindabad! Feudalism Murdabad! One more road to go! The message is clear, Pakistan is not the private fieldom of the Bhuttos, Pakistan belongs to the people of Pakistan. It's time even Jiayals remember this.
inshaAllah, other side will be opened tomorrow. This wall was declared 'illegal' from the supreme court 175 days ago.
I am resident of NA250 - This disrupts traffic flow and road should be fully opened. I support this movement by PTI & I'm not PTI supporter.
Bring the wall down. Pakistan is not anyone's Empire!
