KARACHI: The alleged culprit who carried out a bomb attack on former Maripur SHO Shafiq Tanoli on December 19 died during treatment at a hospital on Friday. The law enforcers believe that the deceased, who was brought in an injured condition, had rammed his motorcycle into Tanoli's vehicle.

The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Bakht Zareen aka Qudratullah. He was admitted to the Jinnah Postgradaute Medical Centre (JPMC), where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. "I am 100 per cent sure that he was the man who rammed his motorcycle into my Vigo," said former SHO Tanoli while talking to The Express Tribune. "He was a militant of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan-Swat. I had killed two militants of the same group before this attack happened." Tanoli further said that the police have traced the group of the terrorists and the investigators have also received some other leads.

Police sources said the investigators have detained around half a dozen suspects from Old Sabzi Mandi area over their suspected involvement in the bomb attack on Tanoli. The suspects were shifted to undisclosed location for further questioning.

On the other hand, the heirs of the deceased claimed that the deceased was innocent and not involved in the attack.  Zareen  hailed from Bajaur Agency and lived in Old Sabzi Mandi area. His heirs claimed that he was a labourer. "The police have gone mad. They think every second person injured in the blast is the attacker. Earlier, they had claimed other two injured persons to be the alleged attackers," said a family member of the deceased, Ibrahim, while talking to The Express Tribune. "It is bad luck that he belonged to the Bajaur Agency but the police should be aware that every person in Pakhtun Chowk and Old Sabzi Mandi hails from Bajaur Agency and are labourers."

A protest was also staged in the Old Sabzi Mandi area to condemn the police claims and the detention of six persons. "The police have asked us to take the body for the burial," said Ibrahim. "But we have told them we will not take the body until the police release all the detainees." He said that the police, after declaring the deceased as an attacker, was trying to implicate the detainees in the bomb attack.
