LAHORE:

Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has directed the Inspector General of Police Punjab (IGP) Khan Baig to submit a report about the investigation into the rape of a five-year-old girl from Mughalpura, Lahore.

The report must be submitted within two weeks.

The IGP appeared before a three-member bench on Tuesday and informed the court that as many as 194 suspects have been interrogated so far; in the absence of substantive evidence, no arrests have been made so far, according to the IGP, who added that DIG Investigation is monitoring progress in the case.

IGP Baig sought time to submit a final report on the investigation. The bench allowed the request and adjourned the hearing for two weeks. The bench was holding suo motu proceedings at the Lahore registry as no arrests have been made in the case. Acting Advocate General Punjab Mustafa Ramday and SP CIA (Organised Crime) Umar Virk also appeared before the bench.

Former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took suo motu notice of the matter on September 13. Following the former CJP’s orders, the IGP submitted a report pertaining to the sexual assault. The report explains that a medical examination proved that the five-year-old girl was sexually abused. According to her statement, a man bought her ice-cream and crackers before three men in a white car abducted her and took her to an abandoned house. She was later abandoned outside a local hospital in critical condition. The young girl said she fainted and later awoke in the hospital.

The IGP’s report states that two teams, each headed by the SP Civil Lines and SP CIA, were formed to deal with the case.

@ Umer, You are right....!!!! This is the begining of his era and to pass his tenure, he will follow the tactics used by his then superior. In lieu, the lower courts should handle the pending cases in the supreme court.

Chief justice orders report of rape investigation

Could he not have asked a lower court to handle this? Seems he is after cheap publicity like the previous cheap justice.
