ISLAMABAD:

A police official has been arrested for losing an official wireless set which ended up in the hands of militants. The Kohsar police arrested telephone operator Intizar Ali for losing an official wireless set.

Police sources said that during his assignment with former inspector general of the Islamabad Police Bani Amin, Ali lost the official wireless set but did not report it. A few days ago, a man speaking on a Channel of the police wireless communication system warned that explosives had been planted at various places in the federal capital. The informant claimed that he belonged to a banned militant outfit. Initially, it was suspected that the militants may have abducted a police official and were using his wireless set. However, after a detailed inquiry it was established that the wireless set issued to Ali was missing.

Deputed as operator to SSP Dr Muhammad Rizwan, Ali was interrogated by the police and confirmed that he had lost the set but had not reported it. Based on this, the Kohsar police registered an FIR against him. “The accused in our custody on remand and we are investigating,” said Kohsar police ASI Malik Arshad.

In two separate incidents, five other police officials were also arrested for negligence and corrupt practices. The Sihala police arrested four of its officials for allegedly helping two robbers flee from a crime scene. “We are investigating the arrested policemen to determine whether they helped the accused in escaping, or if their negligence provided room for the dacoits to escape,” said a police officer.  Similarly, the Ramna Police registered an FIR against two police officials for assisting a group in illegally occupying some land in Mera Jafar.
