Dr Malik rejoins Virtual University as rector

Dr Malik’s career started with becoming the first chairman of Punjab University Computer Science Department in 1991.

A ‘new’ rector has taken charge at Virtual University (VU). Dr Naveed Akhtar Malik, the founding rector of VU and a proud holder of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, reassumed the post a few days back. Malik earned a doctorate in Electric Engineering and Computer Sciences from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982, specialising in Digital Signal Processing. He was also awarded the Jinnah Award and the Quaid-i-Azam scholarship for his performance while acquiring an MSc in Physics.


Dr Malik’s career started with becoming the first chairman of the Punjab University Computer Science Department in 1991.

Later, he became the founding rector of the Virtual University of Pakistan, a post he held till 2012.

Malik has also been selected by IDRC Canada to coordinate a multi-country research effort in Distance Learning Technologies in the South East Asian region. His earlier work portfolio include Pakistan Project management at MIT-BLOSSOMS, establishing the PU optical fibre network in 1998, and developing the PU exam system in 1994.
