QUETTA: A man was killed and at least 25 people have been injured when a bomb went off in the crowded Metta Chowk in Pashtunabad area on the outskirts of Quetta on Thursday.

“One of the injured succumbed to his injuries on his way to hospital. We received one dead body and 25 injured, including boys in their early teenage,” the medico legal officer at the Sandeman hospital told The Express Tribune.

Some of the injured are in critical condition while others received splinter wounds.

Rescue workers said some of the injured had been taken to private hospitals.

According to the Pashtunabad police station, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) had been planted under a vendor’s stall in the crowded Metta Chowk.

"A timed device planted along the road side close to several pushcarts selling mainly dry fruits went off, killing one person and wounding 15 others," local bomb disposal chief Abdul Razzaq told AFP.

Soon after the blast, a heavy contingent of police and security forces rushed to the spot soon and put up a cordon around the blast area.

Pashtunabad is an outskirt of Quetta where hundreds of Afghan refugees have taken shelter for years.

First and foremost, we send our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families. We wish a quick and speedy recovery to those who are injured.

This latest act of terror joins the list of many in the last few days. It is safe to say that the terrorists are fully focused on pushing their deadly agenda forward. They continue to prey upon innocent civilians in their bid to spread fear and chaos. Those who continue to support conspiracy theories should realize that the brave Pakistani soldiers are sacrificing their lives daily in trying to protect the nation from the same culprits. We share a common stance against terrorism, and fully support the Pakistani government in their efforts to counter insurgency. Our officials continue to meet to address our common concerns in the region, as evident by the recent meeting between Gen. Joseph F. Dunford and Gen. Raheel Sharif. We will continue to build on our improving relationship, and certainly hope to stay unified against our common enemies in the region.
