“Be ready for load-shedding in coming days and months as hydel generation is going to decrease dramatically,” said Dar while addressing a Conference on Integrated Transit Trade Management System. He said the closure of canals for annual cleaning will result in a decrease in hydro-power generation.
Hydel generation stood at 37% of the total power generated on Wednesday, according to Ministry of Water and Power statistics. On December 18, the total power generation at peak time was 11,000 megawatts including 4004 MW of hydel, against the demand of 13,595 MW. The shortfall was 2600 MW at peak time.
In the first week of December, hydel generation amounted to 5000 MW, which is expected to come down to less than 1000 MW from December 26 onward when the canals will be closed down by Indus River System Authority for five weeks. The reduced generation will cause six to eight hours of load-shedding across the country on a daily basis, according to Ministry of Water and Power officials.
Instead of enhancing gas supply to the power plants, the federal government on Tuesday cut 85 mmfcd gas supply to them and gave it to the industries in clear violation of its own National Power Policy, which gives priority to the power sector over the industrial sector. This will further reduce power generation by at least 500 MW, increasing power outage durations by another hour and a half.
Dar defended the decision of shifting gas to the industries and argued that this was necessary to maintain the momentum of economic growth, which picked up in the first quarter of the fiscal year.
The Gross Domestic Product growth registered at 5% in July-September period of the current fiscal year as compared to the comparative period of the previous fiscal year.
He added that in difficult times, the nation has to make a choice between bearing comparatively more load-shedding during winters and gaining the dividends of growth or shutting down the industries and increasing unemployment.
The minister said the government was also trying to bring a thermal power plant on the national grid system, which had been shut down due to administrative reasons.
He said the government’s decision to clear Rs503 billion circular debt not only saved Rs55 billion annually on account of interest but also added 1700 MW electricity into the system. There was daily load-shedding of sixteen to eighteen hours in the country during the last months of the previous government due to non-payment of this amount, the finance minister stated.
Dar said the government was working to find long-term solutions to the energy problems.

Every body in Pakistan like to become politician but no even one know to rule.
Every body in Pakistan like to become politician but no even one person know to rule.
@Indignant: Is'nt Shabaz Sharif said that If I do not solve energy crisis in six months "mera naam shabaz sharif nahi". Secondlay before throwing the blame on previous governtmts do some study. Musharaf constrcuted Khan Khwar power projocet in Shangla, Alai Khwar in Batgram and Dubair Khwar in Kohisatan with 498 MW combine capacity, and numerous more in other parts of country however as I have seen only above three so I am telling of only these.
@goggi (Lahore): JF-17 has open new doors for Pakistan ......long hours of load shedding.
Had the billions of dollars spent on this non-productive project with limited utility in war, devoted to enhancing of electricity power in Pakistan, the country would have been self-sufficient in energy production and not facing power cuts in domestic and industrial units.
Army please keep away Pakistan from PML-N. Oh sorry I forgot that new COAS is also General Raheel "Shareef"........ This long hours load shedding is only for the nation not for the leaders' offices and official residences because in Pakistan every tension, disturbance, problem, turmoil, ordeal and difficulty is for the nation and leaders are exempted......
@Ch. Allah Daad: Really.....!!!!
Back to square one. A few cronies made hundreds of billions out of energy crisis. Previous governments were right in not paying circular debts to these criminals, who later bribed the Sharif Family to get 600 billion released. The entire process was shady, and still no one knows who got how much. Someone should file a reference against this scam.
@SH: Sir, can you please tell me the timeline when Shahbaz Sharif will change his name as promised in election campaign.
Total power generation by only state in gujarat is about 23,888 MW which is more than twice the total capacity of whole pakistan.Very strange !
No Electricty means no use of Electrical Devices ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ extending their life and reducing repair bills. Thank You Sir.
@Tariq:
Yeah ! same kind of under standing was demanding by the supporters of PPP and what did we get from them.....in the next 5 years of PML N rule we may see only left overs....NS and his team does not seem have learnt any lesson from their past mistakes....
@kamran: "Responsible of load shedding is Pervez Musharraf and last PPP government"
Then why did they claim before the elections to solve load shedding problem in 6 months? Josh e Khitabat eh? Can someone explain to me the difference between Josh e Khitabat, white lies and fooling the people? These are so called leaders of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. God help us.
Pls blame Imran Khan for this Where are you PPP, MQM, PML trolls???
@lol: He is talking sense . River system closes in dec 26 to 4 th feb it's snow season
@asim: My friend you've got it wrong.......it was the 5 years of PPP-Z that has brought the economy to its knees and this government does not have the spine to hold them accountable nor take the hard steps necessary to correct the slide.
No one has talked about the root cause of load shedding. All are doing baseless criticism on just one statement. How narrow-minded and short-minded we are? I appreciate the efforts of government regarding load shedding which will become fruitful after some span of time. I request Pakistanis to please observe patience. PML-N is elected by we Pakistanis and they should be given sufficient time to perform.
A lot of hopes from PML N but some time is required to fulfill the hopes. No hope from PTI.
Mr.Dollar oh sorry i forgot Mr. Ishaq Dar, yes u can do every thing against us because u r in power. But remember those days are not far when u have to answeable to your masses.
This is NOT aheartless Government +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ To compensate you for half electricty availability they doubled the electricty price so that your bill does not go down and ruin your budget. Thanks You Sir.
Is her the Water and Power minister now ?
and hats off to all those idiots who voted them into power. I salute your stupidity in continuing to vote for them time and time again. Some of us are never meant to learn
I am shocked to view the above comments against federal government. No one is feeling the sensitivity of the issue. Load shedding is a chronic issue. Responsible of load shedding is Pervez Musharraf and last PPP government. We should encourage our present government to deal with the issue. I am 100% sure that Nawaz Sharif is sincerely making the efforts to overcome the problem but a lot of money and investment is required to resolve the issue. Look at the decreasing foreign exchange reserves of Pakistan. Present government is not responsible for that. But PTI fans submit their comments without understanding the issue.
"The reduced generation will cause six to eight hours of load-shedding across the country on a daily basis" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reality : 12 to 16 hours of load shedding!. ET pls publish daily reports of Load shedding hours in every major city.
Load shedding can be reduced if KPK corrupt government stops theft of electricity in KPK. I believe that KPK corrupt government will not do so because they cannot do so. They are busy only in doing Dharna Politics. Shame for PTI.
ush to the market and buy +++++++++++++++++++++ Candles and solar chargers.
I voted for PML(N) and I believe in sincere efforts being done by PML(N) to rectify the situation. PML(N) came into power after 14 years. There is garbage of 14 years of corruption and lawlessness. We should give some time to PML(N). Everything will be ok within a couple of years.
PML-N is trying its level best to give life to a dead economy. Conditions will be better soon Insha Allah. Allah bless Pakistan Allah bless PML-N.
Good Move.............
I am ashamed to vote for PML-N
Todate, Mr Ishaq Dar deserves our applause for jailing the ginnie of loadshedding. Most of the Pakistanis have not yet forgotten the horrible experience of 18-20 hours loadshedding everyday during last winter!
JF-17 planes 'open new doors' for Pakistan..........long hours of load-shedding.............a grotesque madness!
Would it mean that Punjab CM might again be running his government from open ground under Pakistan Monument like he did last year to protest against energy shortages?
@Ahmad: In KP majority of consumers steal electricity but PTI government has not done anything. Imran should start campaign in this regard too, then you will see whose end comes first.
Thank you SIR DAR!!!! (SHARIFF FAMILY) to take billions of loan at the behest of poor people of PAKISTAN......Give away that loan to worlds most in efficient IPPs (Established by PPP and nurtured by PMLN) to pay off the circular debt.............And now my dear Minister is warning about Worst Loadshedding.............
Doesn't this tell us that Govt don't know what they are doing and Nawaz is same old Bluff as he has been since he entered politics..........The only place that prospers and still is prospering is PUNJAB........Something is fishy....
It's not going to be 20 hours of black outs as it used to happen during previous government. It will be 4 to 6 hours and that too for a very limited period. For PML (N) it's too long.
Where are the PML N serfs. I thought load shedding would be ended?
How about a few less cruise missiles and use that money to buy fuel for the power plants.
Now we will miss the ex CJ even more +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ tTime for suo moto....
Now no one appreciate there being no loadshedding for a couple of months but now will start crying over load shedding due to factors that are not in the government's control.
PMLN should realize that mere statements don't run the affairs of the state and don't solve the problems. Your love affair with the Punjab based media won't last too long, to cover up your crimes. Please start doing some work now.
Last Government started eating (food)us! Now they are completing which the previous culprits left! Ya Allah help us.
But a pity poor can not buy Gent sets oil to run t e same .
@Indignant: Nothing but the official narrative of PMLN pinning everything on others (Previous government, Imran Khan, Musharraf, all Pakistanis), while absolving the divinely figure of Molvi Nawaz Sharif. First rule of management is to take responsibility, not look for scapegoats.
@I Mohammed: There is no comparison. This current corrupt government has broken all records in just 6 months. Just the thought of having to deal with them for another 4-1/2 years shivers me. 600 billion rupees taken out of poor people's pockets, and no one knows where it went. Someone converted it into dollars and then laundered it out of the country. Then Sen. Pervaiz Rasheed informed us about digit growth. He must be talking about the growth of the Sharif Enterprises. Now we hear that PM's daughter will oversee 100 billion rupees. My goodbye to that 100 billion as well.
Parliamentary 'democracy' is the most corrupt of all forms of government. Hordes of corrupt and incompetent manage to rule, rather govern the masses. Their lifestyles only mock the people they rule through their stolen mandate.
The loading is a chronic issue it can not solved with magic lamp. The past governments never took it serious. Now we hope the present government will something concrete to lessen the issue. The people of Pakistan with the government observing austerity in use of electricity.
where are the PMLN voters and supporters, Oh I forgot, they are begging in the queue for the youth loan
I can't express my hatred In words right now
Here we Go with Xperienced Guys of PML-N.......
This is not why i voted for your party. Do something Mr.Dar!
'Get ready for long hours of load-shedding, says Ishaq Dar" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ But the USD will be available at 100 Rs !
"Get ready for long hours of load-shedding, says Ishaq Dar " +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ be prepared for major riots all over the country.
This seems to be the same story as previous government. PML came into power promising to rectify the energy issue. Its only taken a few months for the PML to realise that they cannot deliver on any of the promises, especially resolving energy crisis. The Rich/Elite continue to plunder the resources and wealth of the nation, its a shame to know that so many people sacrificed their lives for this nation. The ruling elite don't need to worry about energy issues because they have plenty of money to ensure generators are in place.
Shame on the politicians, they are only in power to satisfy their ego's and to fill their bank accounts. They are not interested in serving the public - only server their vested interests.
There will be no load-shedding in the sharif Household, That i guarantee.
But dont worry, N-Leaguer and Ch Daad will power the households with electricity generated from self righteousness.
Munshi sahib.. Have you taken over the duties of our water/power Minister as well?
@asim:
I differ wit you. Not --Pakistan is a beggar, but state it means RULERS.Their lust is never ending. In the name of democracy they will legitimise every wrong thing.
@asim: So according to you, it is the fault of the Sharifs that Pakistan is a beggar state. And all in about 6 months.
Never mind the fact that Zardari did nothing to solve the circular debt problem. Never mind that Musharraf did not add 1 KW of electricity during the 11 long years he ran Pakistan. Never mind that the average Pakistani wants his electricity for free and is not willing to pay a dime for it.
I can't believe I am supporting MNS. I do not have high hopes from him, but pinning the load-shedding on him is sheer idiocy.
Mr. Dar, have you ever give any good news since you assumed this office? -Hickeprices -Dollar went up -energy crises still stable -Loadshading out of control......................please resign and rest, the rest will be ok. Nikki from Islamabad
PML-N.. get ready for your end too.
govt of pak again fooling its people......lie lie and more lies...... this dar is the one who said pak to become top 10 large economies SOON....... shamlesss leaders keep on lying and fooling the public...anyway why do we care...??
Isn't this what they promised us during the electoral campaign? Sher aya sher.
This family has made pakistan a beggar state
