Pakistan can transform its “burden of population” into “skilled manpower” if it benefits from the opportunities offered by Information technology (IT). This was the crux of talks delivered on Monday, the first day of the 11th international conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT). The three-day event, organised by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, aims to bridge the gap between the modern world and Pakistan in the ever-changing field of IT.
The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for engineers, academicians, scientists, industrial professionals and researchers from all over the world to present their research in the field of IT and technological innovation.
Out of 225 papers submitted this year, the organisers of the conference shortlisted 49 for presentation.
In the welcome address, COMSATS Rector Junaid Zaidi told the participants that Pakistan could transform its burden into opportunities. Giving an example he said, “Population has been a ticking bomb for Pakistan, but IT can help them transform into skilled manpower, and hence an asset.”
He urged the students take the initiative to lead in the field of software making and make Pakistan proud across the globe.
Earlier, Prof. Elisa Bertino from Purdue University, USA spoke on ‘Challenges and Opportunities with Big Data.’ Usman Javaid from Vodafone Group Services UK delivered a talk on ‘5G Mobile Networks in the making- Prospects & Challenges.’
The conference contains series of talks by world renowned scholars and researchers. PhD students will have the opportunity to present their ongoing research. Tutorial sessions will also be a part of FIT 2013 in which various topics of interest for IT community will be organized and delivered.
Exhibitions on undergraduate projects will provide an opportunity to the fresh minds to share their innovative ideas with the seasoned researchers and scholars.
At the end of the conference, an IT Innovation Award worth Rs1 million will be given to the most innovative idea in the field.
