New chief justice takes suo motu notice of selective coverage
Only one TV channel was allowed to exclusively cover the full-court reference of former chief justice Chaudhry.
ISLAMABAD:
New Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani took suo motu notice of court administration allowing only one private TV channel to exclusively cover the full-court reference in honour of outgoing chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Express News reported on Thursday.
Justice Jillani took oath as the country’s top judge this morning and this was his first suo motu notice.
The additional registrar of the apex court will be heading the inquiry into this matter.
Journalists from other news channels had staged a protest against the discrimination displayed by the court administration in the premises of the Supreme Court on the occasion of the retirement of the outgoing chief justice.
They had demanded the new chief justice hold an inquiry into the incident. They said that a few employees of the apex court were also involved in the conspiracy and demanded an independent inquiry.
The secretary of the outgoing chief justice Chaudhry had explained that services of a private cameraman were acquired and he was asked to provide the footage to all TV channels, but he provided footage to one specific channel only.
The media group was favoured at the cost of national and international media.
