Frenchman Richard Gasquet has laboured to a three set win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the Monte Carlo Masters.
Gasquet, who was suspended after testing positive for cocaine at the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida, is still struggling to recapture his old form.
In other matches, Spanish David Ferrer and his compatriot, former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero, advanced to the second round with comfortable first up wins.
Davvid Nalbandian, Tomas Berdych and Julien Benneteau also moved into the second round.
