Prices continue to rise at Sunday Bazaars

CDGL cancels licences of 15 stall holders in various bazaars around the city for selling sub-standard commodities.

LAHORE: The City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) has cancelled licences of 15 stall holders in various Sunday Bazaars around the city for selling sub-standard commodities.

The CDGL also registered cases against eight vendors for selling commodities for higher prices than those set by the CDGL.

Ahad Khan Cheema, the newly appointed district coordination officer, last week ordered the cancellation of the Taj Pura Sunday Bazaar this week for security reasons. Contrary to the orders, vendors setup the Taj Pura Sunday Bazaar and continued business at the venue.

Normal business activity was witnessed in other Sunday Bazaars. Prices of various commodities were stable or slightly higher than last week.

The prices of potatoes varied from Rs25 to Rs29 per kilogram (Kg). Stored potatoes were sold at Rs17 to Rs19 per kg, as compared to last week’s rates of Rs16 to Rs18 per kg. The official price set by the CDGL for onions was Rs28 to Rs33 per kg, however, at certain bazaars it was sold at Rs30 to Rs40 per kg. Last week onions cost Rs26 to Rs32 per kg.

The city market committee had fixed the price of tomatoes for Sunday Bazaars at Rs45 to Rs50, whereas they were being sold at Rs50 to Rs55 per kg. Cucumbers were sold at Rs61 to Rs81 per kg, a Re1 increase from the last week’s prices. The price of ginger (China) also increased by Rs10 per kg from last and was sold at Rs190 to Rs195 per kg. The price of ginger (India) also witnessed a Rs10 increase from last week and was sold at Rs90 to Rs100 per kg.

Green chillies remained stable at the previous week’s rates of Rs50 to Rs60 per kg. The cost of lemons was fixed at Rs36 to Rs41 per kg as compared to last week’s Rs35 to Rs40 per kg.

The price of garlic (desi/local) continued to rise this week. With an increase of Rs5 per kg, it was sold at Rs205 to Rs215 per kg. Garlic (China) was sold at Rs195 to Rs205 per kg, a Rs5 increase over last week.

The price of spinach remained the same and it was sold at Rs10 to Rs12 per kg.

The prices of various seasonal fruits also witnessed an increase. Different varieties of oranges were available at Rs25 per dozen to Rs43 per dozen, an increase of Rs3 from last week’s price. Mandarins were being sold at Rs25 to Rs40 per dozen, an increase of Rs5, while the rate of blood oranges remained stable at Rs22 to Rs28 per dozen.

The price of guavas remained stable at Rs30 to Rs50 per kg. Different varieties of banana were available at Rs20 to Rs35 per dozen. The price of Kala Kolo apples remained the same as last week’s Rs38 to Rs60 per kg. The price of Amri apple increased by Rs2 and was sold at Rs27 to Rs32, while white apples were sold at Rs23 to Rs26 per kg, a Re1 increase from last week.
