The IJT is the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).
After students were cleared out of a hostel and some were arrested, agitated students reacted by snatching keys from drivers and blocking roads and underpasses near the university.
Police attempted to take them into custody, but the students hid in blocks in the university. Traffic has been cleared from some roads but others are still blocked despite police efforts.
Students also set a passenger bus on fire after dragging people out of it. Following this incident, the police made more arrests, with the total number apprehended rising to 21.
Jamiat members were protesting against a press conference held by the university in which the administration had alleged that members of the party had locked two teachers of the law college in classrooms on November 30.
The protest was held on a bridge connecting the university with the hostels. The agitated students had blocked traffic on the bridge.
A contingent of police officers arrested 13 boys and cleared out the university's Hostel No 16, as it is considered a stronghold for Jamiat members.
Following the evacuation, a group of students started pelting stones and police arrested another four IJT members.
Police seized bottles of alcohol from the room of a Jamiat spokesperson, identified as Rao Adnan.
There are conflicting reports about whether the police arrived first, after which the students began protesting, or if they came in response to the students' protest against the administration.
IJT students continued violent protests till late evening, blocking traffic and causing chaos on the streets of Lahore.
‘Harbouring militants’
PU vice chancellor had accused IJT of harbouring militants in the university hostels.
However, Jamiat had refuted the claim and accused the VC of “trying to defame Jamiat” to hide his own inefficiency.
Early September, intelligence agencies had arrested Ahmed Sajjad, believed to have been the handler for a terrorist cell in Lahore, from PU Hostel No 1.
A senior serving intelligence agency officer had told The Express Tribune that JI has been directly and indirectly involved in providing accommodation to al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan.

About time Islami Jamiat Taleba is banned and declared a terrorist organisation. If beating up students, occupying hostels, canteens, disrupting classes, imposing their version of law, displaying and often using weapons in educational institutes etc is not terrorism, what is?!
Can we now clear other Education institutions held hostage by "Student Wings" of other parties as well. PPP, MQM and ruling PML. all have so called student wings destroying atmosphere of their respective strong holds (Universities).

I was a student at Karachi University in the 1970s. The IJT were a violent fascist organisation then and they are a violent fascist oufit now. They should be turfed out of all educational institutions.

I just don't get it - Pakistan is supposed to be an Islamic Republic so if religious parties want it to become a true Islamic State through acceptance of Sharia for governance why are so many educated people against it. Ask yourself who is brainwashed - JI or western-educated seculars?
The violence, extremism and “ghundagardi” was started by Islami-Jumiat-e-Talaba on the name of region in Pakistani educational institutes and these evil practices will only fish after we’ll get rid of these exploiter and gangsters behind the veil of Holy religion of Islam, InshAllah.
I know Jamiaat " students " from 1961 when I was a student of Punjab University ( City Campus ) and the roguish role they played , they literally destroyed the educational ethos / learning culture of the university or the tradition of scholarship that the university had since before partition . They constantly harassed women students , teachers and interfered in everything from admissions to day today administrative affairs . The Jamiaat students particularly / and others are poison for the universities sooner they are banned better it will be for university education . But politicians will never allow universities to prosper become institution of higher learning . Universities are recruiting grounds for Jamiaat and others .

University of learning or terrorism ?
I was student in PU and knew many of these JI activists. There agenda is to replace Pakistan with a Wahabhi style state. They will turn us into Arabistan.
All the education institutions including Punjab University should be cleaned from all student organizations, especially IJT which involves in many violence activities. Frankly these so-called student' organization are doing nothing for the betterment of the students rather they are creating terror environment within the educational institutions. The way IJT' member behaved is really condemnable, the government should take firm actions against such elements.

JI has been involved in student politics and violence since it's inception. It uses terror on both staff and the student body to set its agenda. Its time that the intelligence agencies and police clear all academic premises of both staff and students harboring violent agenda and be moved to JI seminaries from publicly funded academic institutions. They should not disrupt learning and life of students who want to advance in life.
