KARACHI: Sindh local government and information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that at least 22 illegal water hydrants have been demolished since he took charge as the minister for local government a few weeks back.
He was talking to the media after a raid on the illegal water hydrants in Sultanabad on Wednesday. During the raid conducted by the minister and officials of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, they ordered on the spot demolition of the hydrants.
“The hydrants are completely demolished and the tankers and machinery are taken into custody,” he informed, adding that the remaining 40 illegal hydrants would also be demolished within a week. He stressed that all illegal water hydrants, billboards and car parks would also be removed. Moreover, marriage halls would also be removed from parks and playgrounds. Memon said that strict action would be taken against the officials found involved in such practices.
He added that instructions have been issued to the Sindh IGP, the Rangers DG and the additional IG to help the water board officials remove these illegal hydrants. “It is our responsibility to provide drinking water to the citizens and, to achieve this, no hindrance will be tolerated.” Responding to a question, he said that the hydrants which have been closed down would not be allowed to reopen.
