HARIPUR:

A tractor driver on Monday accused an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) police of subjecting him to physical torture for allegedly not paying graft to the police officer.

Qasim Masood, a resident of village Jati Pind, told journalists on Monday he was returning home after working his field with his tractor when Saddar police station ASI Mir Afzal intercepted him.

The ASI inquired about an electricity pole which a vehicle had damaged a few days ago. According to Qasim, Afzal asked him to take his tractor to the police station for inspection or pay him Rs1,000 for diesel for his police van.

“When I refused, ASI Afzal humiliated me publicly and started beating with a bamboo stick,” he said. Later, the officer took him to the police station where he was subjected to severe physical torture again.

In reply to a question, the victim said Afzal released him after someone with influence approached his senior officers. The ASI refuted the statement. Afzal maintained he did not torture the complainant.
