South Asia has been lagging behind other regions in every aspect because of tensions between Pakistan and India. If they join hands to foster peace, they can make immense progress, former education minister Mian Imran Masood said at conference at the Punjab University on Monday.
The PU’s Department of History had organised an international conference on Socio-Economic and Cultural Relations between India and Pakistan. The inaugural session was presided over by Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran and Masud was the chief guest.
Kamran urged historians to write history based on facts.
Prof Zhon Rong from Jiangsu Normal University, China, in his keynote speech, discussed the potential of investment and joint ventures between India, Pakistan and China. He said the opportunities were great and could only be exploited if there was peace in the region.
Masud appreciated gestures for peace by the governments of India and Pakistan.
LUMS Professor Muhammad Waseem discussed the problems and prospects of peace between India and Pakistan. He said the problems were not limited to the governmental level, but in fact serious psychological and mental constructs among the people created serious barriers and constraints for peace.
He said there was an urgent need to de-contextualise the situation. “Academic discourses should dispose of the meta-narratives glorifying themselves and vilifying the ‘other’,” he said.
The inaugural session was followed by three academic sessions. They focused on Economic and Socio-Cultural cooperation in South Asia, Shared Memories, Partition and Communal Relations and Peace, Religion and Mysticism. Fifteen scholars presented their papers. The conference will continue till Wednesday, November 27.

@Jhabo: You can keep your wealth and talent, we are fine. Just stay out of our life! Our leader is only representing one province.
What will India or China buy from Pakistan? What development you talking about? Only Pak manufacturer and consumers will pay the price for cheap and 2nd grade junk from India dumped here for 12/1rupee. Have'nt Punjab converted most all Islamic history in schools and colleges to now pro-India history...as advised by India? NS can just buy TaTa, Birla shares like before. Why he has to drag whole Pakistan sheeps to wolfs' dinner party? Thanks... But... No thank you!
@Jhabo: Standard&Poor's are not very optimistic about Indian economy in future. Ernst&young report(s) is a paid job by corrupt congress government in election time.

Forget Kashmir , hand over POK and hafiz saeed , dismantle terror camps , India will sure consider making peace. Now India does not need Pakistan for progress , sure , Pakistan requires India for progress.Earnst and Young latest report : India is number one destination for foreign investors , China and USA are 2nd and 3rd respectively.
@Syed Jalal Kashmiri: "...or face revolution by Kashmiri nation." So, why have you been postponing "revolution by Kashmiri nation" all these years? Fate of the Kashmiri nation will not be much different than the fate of the Kurd "nation". Splintered, at the mercy of others for all time. You are lucky that your "nation" is embroiled with only two nations instead of three or more for the Kurds. Even then there is not much hope for the "Kashmiri nation" with stalwarts like you fighting its cause.
dear sir, it is good to have nobel , lofty thoughts- but most indians are happy that pakistan has been formed- so they can go on with their lives- good luck to you and wish us good luck- we have no animosity towards you inspite of the 26/11 mumbai massacre- May Allah bless all south asian states to live in peace forever with excellent relations with each other- let us have good relations with china, usa, uk , etc- too. Your nawaz sharif is a sensible person who seeks peace with india- but we know that the pakistani army and the ISI will never allow peace with india , because then their defence budgets will be curtailed and their benefits reduced. so let us be practical and let us live with the status quo- of at least not fighting against each other all the time like cats and dogs. let us have peace and harmony. If possible let us have EU type of relations in SAARC with visa-free travel and other sensible trade relations.
@ syed jalal Kashmiri , you have no choice but to accept yourself either as a Pakistani or Indian.
@Syed Jalal Kashmiri: | . Nothing is going to happen .
Mian Imran Masood grossly overestimates Pakistan’s ability to play spoiler and prevent the development of India. The development of India post liberalization in 1991 has taken place against the background of the un-peaceful actions of Pakistan such as fomenting terrorism targeting India. The development of India will continue despite the un-peaceful actions of Pakistan such as fomenting terrorism targeting India.
India should understand that they only lose their moral high ground and prestige by brutalizing Kashmiri nation. I ask my brothers in Pakistan not to support this occupation and to defend your brothers in Kashmir. Give Kashmiris the right to choose their destiny, or face revolution by Kashmiri nation.
