Predictably, social media went into meltdown for real as the surprise trailer aired after the 50th Anniversary Special of Doctor Who, with #SherlockLives trending on Twitter.
A female fan is shown exclaiming "Oh. My. God!" as a barrage of various twitter hashtags including #SherlockIsAlive!, #SherlockIsNotDead and #SherlockLives takes over the screen. Very meta, BBC. Sadly, not one of them mentions how he managed to pull off his death-defying escapade.
Season two of the popular crime drama ended with Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) convincingly faking his own death by jumping off the roof of St Bartholomew’s hospital to escape arch-nemesis Professor James Moriarty (Andrew Scott). While viewers in the US have been given a January 19, 2014 air date, the rest of the world waits with baited breath to find out when they'll finally be able to see how Sherlock did it.
