BAHAWALPUR/ FAISALABAD:

A 28-year-old man set himself on fire on Thursday after his parents turned down his request to support his proposal for his girlfriend. He was taken to Allied Hospital, where he was said to be in critical condition.

Jhang Bazaar police said Arshad Ali, a resident of Partapnagar, had wanted to marry a girlfriend, but his parents had opposed him.

They said he had left home earlier following an argument with his parents over the issue. He was later brought back by some relatives who had intervened.

They told police that Ali had been trying to persuade again his parents to accept the woman.

On Thursday they again had an argument. He locked himself in a room and set himself on fire. His family said they broke into the room when they heard him shout.

He was taken to Allied Hospital, where doctors treating him said he was in critical condition.

Dr Muhammad Naseer said Ali had had 50 per cent burns and was being treated at an intensive care unit.

Rafiq Akram, one of Ali’s relatives, said Ali’s parents had had a dispute with parents of the woman he had wanted to marry. He said when he returned home last time, his parents believed he had given up the idea.

Uncle killed, body thrown in canal

The body of a physically-disabled man, who the police said had been killed by his nephew, was recovered from a canal in Bahawalpur.

Derawar police said they arrested the nephew, who confessed to the killing.

They said Aashiq Hussain of Chak 4-DNB near Head Rajkan had lost both his legs in an accidents a few years ago. They said last week, he had had an argument with his nephew, Muhammad Asif, over money.

Six days ago, they said, Asif went to his uncle’s house and beat him up.

He later took him to the DNB Shahiwala Canal and threw him in it.

On Thursday, some passers-by informed the police about a body that was seen in the canal near Kandaywala Bridge.

The deceased was later identified as Hussain.

It was sent to Khatri Bangla Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police said they had been informed that Asif had fled his house after hearing that the body had been recovered.
