Intellectuals like Muhammad Iqbal asserted that a nation is made up of religion. They held that Muslims are one nation because they adhere to one religion — Islam. This was during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the global trend was of emerging ‘nation states’ as the colonial powers were losing their hold and expanding communism was a major threat.
The definition of the term ‘nation’ raised a great debate among intellectuals in British India.
The secular educated stalwarts, like Iqbal, based their thesis on religion. Interestingly, scholars related to the Deoband religious seminary were of the view that ‘qomiat az watan ast’ — nationality is made up of country. For reference, one can even look at the debate between Iqbal and Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, which took a very harsh turn.
Iqbal’s thesis didn’t make any significant dent on Muslims until the All India Muslim League began mass mobilisation using the slogan of religion. Iqbal, in 1937, wrote to Muhammad Ali Jinnah that Islam can guarantee the economic development of Muslims and can be an effective tool against Nehru’s socialism.
Confused as they were between a nation state and an Islamic revival, intellectuals like Iqbal provided the root for the consistent confusion Pakistan has been suffering since its creation.
After the making of Pakistan, its leaders, especially Iqbal and Jinnah, were made idols under the patronage of the newly born state. Religious men like Maududi, who were more effective orators than scholars; and who were either against Pakistan because of the ‘secular’ Jinnah or were indifferent to it, were encouraged to frame the course for the embryonic state. The debate about whether Pakistan would be a Muslim state or an Islamic theocracy delayed the Constitution’s making for a decade.
But worse happened when the military dictators, especially Ziaul Haq, needed religious groups like the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for prolonging their illegitimate rule using religion as a slogan. This nexus shaped the course and the destination is now before us.
Now, in the aftermath of Munawwar Hassan’s misplaced assertion regarding the terrorists as martyrs while the Pakistan Army’s slain soldiers are not, the Pakistan Army and the JI seem to be at loggerheads over the Pakistani Taliban — the military must put a few things before the nation.
First, as the Pakistan Army thinks of the TTP as its enemy now, what does it think of other jihadi outfits such as the Jaish-e-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Haqqani group of the Taliban, etc.? Secondly, the Pakistan Army needs to brief us as to how it sees the Afghan Taliban. Thirdly, we need to be informed how the Afghan Taliban are different from the Pakistani Taliban. Lastly, the JI used to be close to the Pakistan military. Now it is the political wing of not only the Pakistan Taliban but also of alQaeda. The Pakistan Army also needs to clarify its position as to where it stands regarding all the jihadi outfits and their partners in Afghanistan.

Thank you for this brief but intelligent analysis of the historical background of Pakistan's creation. I have felt for a long time that Iqbal's suspicion of all things West and distrust of the nation state has not served us well. He failed to foresee the success of the idea of the modern democratic nation state. His other failure was to think that religion could make a tenable basis for the creation of a modern democratic egalitarian state, which we can see with the benefit of hind sight was misguided and a misreading of how the world was evolving.
p.s. I really wish my Indian friends would contribute more than just their schadenfreude at Pakistan's failures (of which there are admittedly many) or just stay quiet instead of lowering the quality of the debate :)
@Hassan: Oh you mean you don't like it but don't have any logical arguments to refute the author so you will be passive aggressive and trash the language? Right! The language is fine; I was able to understand all the points the author was trying to make and I agree with most. Maybe you need to work on your comprehension.
We Indians are indebted to Mr.Iqbal for creating Pakistan and shoving all crazies in there.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: ''I didn’t add that because I don’t believe your Hindu fascist propaganda. Many Non-Muslims are living happily in Pakistan, and I don’t see any problem with them living among brothers. Hindu fanatics such as yourself will be the death of India. Your situation is rather precarious.''
I think at this moment in time we should be worried if Pakistan will survive or not, because you're clearly oblivious to the fact (probably due to jealousy, maybe) that India is prospering as a nation and moving forward with each passing day, while the people in Pakistan are sitting on their sofas and discussing if Hakeemullah Mehsud is a 'Shaheed' or not.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan, "Many Non-Muslims are living happily in Pakistan". Totally agree with you. Read my post again. It is Muslims who are in danger in Pakistan, because it is the world's largest slaughter house of muslims.
@Hella: I didn't add that because I don't believe your Hindu fascist propaganda. Many Non-Muslims are living happily in Pakistan, and I don't see any problem with them living among brothers. Hindu fanatics such as yourself will be the death of India. Your situation is rather precarious.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan,"Pakistan was created for the safety and protection of the Muslim population of the region from exploitation, massacre, and subjugation by Hindu fanatics. " Totally agree with you there. You just forgot to add "so that Muslim fanatics could have a free hand in the exploitation, massacre and subjugation of Muslims, without any competition from Hindu fanatics". Pakistan today is the largest slaughter house of Muslims in the world.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan "....we have always achieved new heights, with the grace of God, we will achieve much more." Will you please wake up. You are obviously delusional. The facts point to a totally different Pakistan than the one you have in your imagination.
Pakistan was created for the safety and protection of the Muslim population of the region from exploitation, massacre, and subjugation by Hindu fanatics. Millions sacrificed their lives for freedom. Do we really need any other reason? Pakistan was made so its sons and daughters can live in peace and achieve their own greatness without being held back by the machinations of our enemies.
Pakistan is an example of a multi-ethnic, devoutly Islamic, and powerful Muslim nation. Regardless of our problems, we have always achieved new heights, with the grace of God, we will achieve much more.
saying Iqbal created the confusion is a idiotic statement. write is much confused man.
allama iqbal was a 'confused' man, dint know whether he wanted nation state or islamic revival. interesting. I am confused whether I wnated to read ur opinion piece or comment on it..lol
@Humanity: Yes it is - you cannot belittle the great benefactors of the nation. Iqbal was such a great man that he is studied worldwide under the subject of Iqbaliyat. His poems are so great that not only Pakistan, but India and Iran also value him immensely.
Just because most Pakistanis today do not know and do not care about his Persian poetry does not mean we can forget about the great son Iqbal was of Muslim India.
A nation that forgets its benefactors is doomed to destruction - this is what is the cause of Pakistan's downfall. We have forgotten the raison d'etre for our existence and then we seem to want to blame everyone else but ourselves for our follies and stupidity.
Please give me a break.....
@Hassan: no. This is not "an English".
you have had over 65 years to go the direction that you choose to - no one has bound you to 1937. Make something of the country - create jobs, reduce hopelessness and the rest will take care of itself. Our so-called 'educated' need to stop being paper tigers.
@Dr Yousaf:
The writer seems to be blaming Iqbal for his own confusions.
OK Dr Sahib. So tell us, the 'confused ones', when Iqbal equated Islam with a Nation,
A. Did he mean that the entire land mass from Turkey to Bangladesh iso one Nation? OR
B. Did he mean that ONLY the Muslims of the Indian sub-continent are one Nation? OR
C. Did he mean that only those opting for Pakistan are one Nation? OR
D. Did he mean that those who were a part of the one Nation on 14th August,1947 could also cease to be a part of the one Nation in 1973, via the 2nd Amendment? OR
E. Did he mean that the one Nation will be achieved only after it was 'purified' of the non-National elements like Hindus, Christians, Ahmadis and possibly also Shias? Do consult LeJ, SSP and ASWJ before you answer.
Do enlighten us, please.
The writer seems to be blaming Iqbal for his own confusions. This reminds me of a bold Pakistani Prof who used to be a source of ridicule amongst his colleagues and students as he used to bandy around different challenging theories, which no one could comprehend, until his genius was recognized by NASA and plucked away from us. It turned out that it was not him who was confused but the people around him did not have the grey matter to comprehend what he was saying. All i can say that Iqbal's "confused" vision gave us a nation state, and i am wondering what has the "clarity" of this so-called scholar from swat given to the people of swat, let alone the whole of Pakistan. Also sad to see the editor's choice of allowing such a juvenile article to be given space in such a reputable newspaper.
ET kindly start publishing articles that have fresh ideas and new subjects or at least have a new approach to old topics. Unfortunately all the articles seem cliched and boring
Why a country's military are not Martyrs for the Sacrifices made ??
Why does it comes to our mind when people talk about religion mainly Islam as extremism and fundamentalism. It is because we have been programmed to think like this. Iqbal warned us through his poetry of exactly the same kind of divisions and negative perceptions that this article is trying to achieve. We as a society have failed miserably, Divided between liberals and fundamentalists and the POOR (who have no say whatsoever). So instead of trying to find the root cause of why this turmoil in Pakistan, Let us find a solution. Clearly the writer did not study or maybe did not understand the true meaning of Iqbal's poetry. So let's not point fingers at those who provided us with the ideological base on which the nation is still standing (Thanks to the Nukes as well).
Dear author,
The questions regarding the veracity of yours views may be highly debatable, BUT I must say that you are very lucky to have your articles published in an english newspaper. Had this thing been written in an urdu paper, your fate, by now, would have been no different from that of Munawar Hassan.
Kudos, a concise but highly though-provoking. There is dire need to learn either Iqbal was true visionary to be imbibed blindly or revisit his ideology to ascertain nature of confusions we are trapped in.
God Bless Institute for Education and Development in Swat under your Leadership as Executive Director of it thinks Allama Iqbal as Confused person rather Visionary Leader.
Is this an English!!!! Its totally crap full of mistakes and confused sentences!!!!!!!
Stop blaming Zia ul Haq for everything...
Jinnah and Iqbal wanted a Muslim state and they somehow convinced Nehru,Gandhi to agree to it and the muslims in subcontinent also wanted it...While India remained secular,Pakistan became an Islamic state......
Had RSS came to power using anti-Muslim wave,India would be same as Pakistan as its now....A Hindu state where muslims are continously oppressed and most of them would be begging for asylum in Islamic countries just like Pakistani Hindus and ahmedis are doing now...
But the fact that Indians voted for secular parties and toppled the high performing BJP govt because of one Gujarat riot shows that indians wanted secularism while muslims want Islamic constitution...Had our nation not been partioned...We would be having bomb blasts everyday in many places like how Pakistan is ....
Thank you Iqbal and Jinnah for weeding out the poison out of our country and kudos to Zia for giving Pakistan what they dreamed for
Excellent post that has put the cat among the pigeons. For decades the wise have said, if you rear snakes you will be bitten. All the terrorists for and against the State were trained and reared by the Army of the Pure in the misguided belief they could be used as low cost proxies. Many had warned even then of the blowback from pursuing such short sighted policies. That the Afghan Taliban and their very violent allies the Haqqani network were sheltered and protected in Pakistan while being paid by the US / NATO to target them, tells a sorry story. Sooner or later Pakistan will be declared a State sponsor of terrorist, a tag it escaped as long as US/NATO were present next door. Time for decisions but can the foolish ever learn ?
Congratulations for speaking the truth. May bhagwan, allah all bless you.
Just one quibble in an otherwise excellent article. The first para should read "At the time of the political struggle for a separate country for SOME Muslims of British India....etc." The word "some" is missing. In fact, most Muslims were either indifferent or against Pakistan until they were provoked -- or as the author puts it "mobilized."
Pakistan must celebrate Iqbal and sing: "Saaray Jahan say Accha Hindustan Hamara (Our India is the Best in the World)".
He wrote it and it's such a good tarana (song).
@SM: The author is making an interesting point. Whatever you are saying about Iqbal is coming straight from 2nd grade text book. I really like Iqbal's poetry but you are missing the point here.
All: i am a little confused about the fact that Iqbal didn't want to side with the commies. A lot of his poems talk about a socialist system. What we have been taught is (which might not be true) that Iqbal and Jinnah wanted a separate nation for the Muslims and which was to be governed under Islamic principles. However this system wasn't like the sharia system being projected by the likes of JI and TTP. It seemed more like a socialist democracy. Iqbal was a philosopher/thinker and he had nothing to do with the creation of Pakistan. The nation was mobilized under his thoughts by most of the big-wigs of the Muslim League after his death, who clearly were protecting their own interests. Example: they didn't support the land reforms that Nehru proposed.
I had to pinch myself to confirm if I'm reading a Pakistani Newspaper. What is the connection between LeT and PA? Moderators at ET will not post our comments if Indians had asked the same question!!
@SM: Is is necessary to belittle the author? Is is wrong to question the motives that led Pakistan on a treacherous path? How else, does one correct the course, unless you want to nose dive deeper into the abyss.
All good questions at the end. Unfortunately there won't be any forthcoming or satisfying answers. There won't be an investigation or inquiry on how Mehsud's farm house was 1 KM away from a Pak base, surrounded in Haqqai country, nor about the recent assassination of a Haqqani living near in a nice residence in Islamabad and able to freely travel for fundraising between the Gulf and Pak, and whose body was mysteriously whisked away for a quick burial up north.
The status quo of patronizing extremists and shady games will continue. Even in this distraction, when addressing the JI, the army spokesperson tried to patronize them through their history and referencing Maulana Maududi.
All these questions for Pakistan army?? Does any other Establishment in the world discusses all these things in the open?? And for those who will point to the west being open...the recent events after Snowden affair, prove it otherwise.
Theocratic States are out dated ideology and dismal failure.Islam has not created a prosperous and peaceful Pakistan.Crime murder daily bombing kidnapping are the norms.Poverty is increasing along with decaying infrastructure.Religion never solves any problem except for spiritual gratification. The world is changing and here in Australia people of different faiths coexist peacefully with one another.
"Intellectuals like Muhammad Iqbal asserted that a nation is made up of religion. They held that Muslims are one nation because they adhere to one religion — Islam" --When Intellectuality of Iqbal was buried with creation of bangladesh , intellectuality of Nazrul Islam and Tagore still has its core intact . If Religion i.e islam had guaranteed nationhood and economic development , then world would have one massive islamic country and there would not have economics as a subject.Hats off to this 'thinker' and 'philosopher' .
Mr.Torwali, You have hit the nail on the target which will be unaccaeptable to many. The trajic Of Muslim world especially Indo-Pakistan is that intellectuals have always shied away from revealing thier orignal believes and unable to preach the western ideas which western Education taught them. Iqbal and similar are the biggest cause of the rot Muslims in Pakistan find themselves
Kudos to the author for being so clear headed and saying what needs to be said in the light of Pakistan's history since 1947 from one perspective at least. Pakistan could do with a lot of people like Zubair Torwali.
Stay safe
