LAHORE: The government has imposed a ban on pillion riding in Punjab on Muharram 9 and 10, Express News reported on Wednesday.

Punjab Law Minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah confirmed the imposition of this ban.

Earlier today, a notification was issued when the government banned pillion riding in Lahore.

According to the directives, women, children and elderly will be exempted from the Lahore ban.

Police will be responsible for arresting violators, who could be kept in custody for 72 hours.

Security measures

As per the security plan for the holy month announced earlier, 15,700 policemen will perform security duty at more than 600 processions and 5,369 majalis in the city.

Around 400 policemen will also perform security duty in plainclothes at processions and majalis at sensitive locations.

Police would patrol within a 100-metres radius of majalis and processions, while parking lots will be set up 100 metres away from processions and majalis.

Obvious Lee | 11 years ago | Reply Pakistan - a nation tying itself into knots since the 80s, till it now seems impossible to unravel it from its death wish. It had a chance when Zia popped it, but in true Pakistani style, it committed hara kiri by not only continuing with Zia's patronage with extremism, but allowing it to grow. While the rest of the world moves on, Pakistan seems obsessed with making religious and doctrinal differences into life and death issues. What a tragicomic nation!
