ISLAMABAD: Former batsman Mohammad Yousuf on Tuesday urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint Inzamamul Haq as the national team's batting coach, not hesitating to remark that the current batsmen owe their batting woes to 'following the wrong role model' in Misbahul Haq.
Yousuf said the team would continue to struggle in registering victories until its batting problems were addressed.
Pakistan lost the one-day series to South Africa by 1-4 on Monday after another batting collapse. The team is exptected to play two T20s starting from November 13.
"I don't know whether we need a head coach but we definitely need a batting coach as soon as possible and there is no better person than Inzamam to do this," The Asian Age quoted Yousuf as saying.
The former batting maestro said unlike Indian cricket, there was an absence of a high-calibre batsman in Pakistan whom people could emulate.
"We don't have any impact batsmen like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli simply because we have developed wrong role models for our new batsmen and that is now beginning to show," he said.
Yousuf, one of Pakistan's top batsmen, said he idolised greats like Javed Miandad and Inzamam but in the last few years Pakistani youngsters had started following the wrong role models.
"India has developed quality batsmen because their youngsters followed proper role models. Their selectors and system recognises and allows their young batsmen to develop and move forward with confidence," he said, before adding, "I don't think there is any favoritism or bias involved in their system."
'Strange batting technique' infecting others
Yousuf minced no words while blasting Misbahul Haq for the present problems.
"Misbah has a strange batting technique and he is someone who consumes lot of balls to get going and is yet not capable of playing an impact innings. The nature of his batting is now beginning to show in our other players."
"He is the wrong example for the other batsmen to follow because technically he himself is suspect against fast bowlers and doesn't have the range of strokes to come and bat higher up the order to play the true captain's role," claimed Yousuf.
"Neither does he have ability to go for big scores or finish a match."
He further said that seeing the state of affairs in the team, Misbah should have been batting at number three, but he has refused to do so and as a result we are now seeing a generation of batsmen who are not technically correct and who are satisfied with just a half-century or more.
Selection committee not experienced enough
Speaking on a private TV channel late Monday night, Mohammad Yousuf had also slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for appointing a selection committee short of the requisite experience in cricket.
"What standing do these selectors have and exactly how much international cricket have they have played?" he asked the day Pakistan suffered a massive 117-run loss in the fifth and final One Day International.
"The poor selection was evident from the team's recent performances against Zimbabwe and South Africa," he remarked.
The committee is without a Chief Selector after Iqbal Qasim decided not to continue at the expiry of his contract.
"The selectors are there with certain references at their credit and not on merit. They are there to earn money and not to serve the game," he said.

Good News ! It is great idea for INZI to be batting coach, Saqlain or Mushatq to be bowling coach; Then the team will be known as DAARHIS ELEVEN; PCB will be renamed as DCB; (DAARHI Cricket Board); Even the Umpires will be required to keep DAARHIS, or alternatively, Stick one up the chin during the match;
Inzi and Yousuf are the real culprit of the deteriorated Pakistani batting line, more so because of their religious inclinations.
I disagree with his assessment on Pakistan's batting problems. In both the series, Zimbabwe as well as South Africa, our batsmen struggled to stay at the crease. In fact they lost their wickets to loose strokes I.e. nasir on the pull, hafeez in the slips. Shehzad played well as long as he was watchful and I don't even want to waste words on Afridi.

I agree with Yousuf's diagnosis but not with remedy. He is totally right about Misbah and his affect on our team.
Everytime the team loses, that's coaching to be blamed!. I wonder why would the players who have spent a decade or more in international cricket, want a coach. Technique and talent helps your name written in the final eleven, beyond that is the game of mental toughnes and approach. Pakistani players lack confidence, nothing else!. Had it been technique then the likes of MS Dhoni would have been sharing the same batting averages as Hafeez or Afridi. India won the world cup under coaching of Gary Kirsten but they continued the same form under Duncan Fletcher, who is not termed as a successful coach. Every Pakistani bastman is playing to cement his place in the team by saving the wicket and not scoring and hence loses both. As we have all known "fortune favors the brave! ".

You clearly have misunderstood the crux of the argument here my friend. We don't have a problem with people being pious, righteous and practicing Muslims. What we do have a problem with is when the same people try to impose their ideology upon others through coercion and other means.
This is what exactly Inzi did in his last years as a cricketer when he would induct or leave players out of the team merely on the basis of religious leanings. Just check out the images from World Cup 2007 and you'll get an idea the number of players who had started to don beards just to be in the good books of Inzimam. The downside to all of this was that a bunch of mediocre players were selected on the basis of a beard and a host of other players were left out just because they were either too liberal or did not like to sit in a circle listening to Imam Inzimam's sermons.

Everyone blames Misbah for what has happened to our cricket during the past year but no one points finger at the coach who has not been able to get any improvement in the batting techniques of our cricketers. All the debutants shine on their first few outings but fail miserably in the follow up matches under his coaching shows that the coach is with the Pakistani team on vacation and not for imparting his vast experience to improve their techniques. I had such high hopes with whatmore because of his track records with sri lanka and Bangladesh but now realize that he has ruined our cricket than developing it....
The problem is not going to solve if a legend like Inzy becomes the Batting coach. Unless the batsman in the middle applies himself, he will get out.The batting coach is not going to bat for them . Misbah is the only consistent batsman in the Pakistani team,the others are mostly awful. Best of luck for the Pakistani team from India.
Imran Khan had the weakest team which won the world cup in 1992 and Wasim Akram had the best team in 1999 which lost miserably in final 1999 world cup. We are consistent in maintaining in-consistency in Cricket. These are all old problems still persisting. The batting quality has further decreased after the introduction of T20 Noora Cricket. Most Pak batsmen have wrong batting techniques. We have a so called hero Shahid Afridi who has played more than 350 One day games but still bats like a club cricketer. There are no international matches in our grounds so the quality has further deteriorated but still I think there is immense talent in Pakistan. You can even make out a team from only one city. But we should have selectors have mindset like Imran Khan had. Imran Khan picked boys from streets and grounds..

Pakistan have slipped to number 6..they have a series coming up against SA again and they are likely to lose..if that happens they would slip to number 8-9...Misbah should learn from people like Sangakkara who took SL to the finals in WC 2011.played tremendously in the tournament yet stepped down as captain..Great leader? a 4-1 against SA..a win-less exist in the CT-2013..and he still doesn't want to take blame for any of this?if hes that supreme as a batsmen..why isn't he able to finish matches. you can go on and on with your verbosity but the fact remains stats speak louder than words..
Guys! in my view M.Y. has rightly pointed out the 'wrong role model'. If someone disagrees, please come up with an argument instead of focusing on Y's religious aspect. At the risk of repeating my self, please focus on the argument.
Unfortunately our so called best player ( Misbah ) in the team is the one who can't even win matches for us. He can score useless fifties and all and can stay as a high scorer only. People should read what Yousuf is saying. It has nothing to do with the religion.

Selectors, Players, X-Players all are the same. Hafeez wants to become ODI captain as well so he will not play any better cricket in test and ODI's. Afridi from day one is not a serious cricketer but a superman who can do wounders but in dreams but can never deliver when required. New players have not been given confidence that they will atleast play for 1 year for Pakistan to overcome their technical abilities and after single series will be dropped. Akmal Brothers and Imran Farhat will always be a part of our team if they play bad / worse / worst cricket. FOR rescue, the old giants are ready to rumble, I mean Shoaib, Abdul Razak, Younus Khan :) ... and for them I dont even want to comment as you all know.
Why Misbah is regarded as an excellent player ... He comes at number 5 when we are normally 65/4 on average in 20 overs. Then he start to build our innings and in the next 90 balls he will add 25 - 27 runs ... and by the time our inning comes to an end, he reaches to his half century in amost 120 balls and he will do this to retain his position.
A team where opener is selected based on his bowling abilities, a bowler is selected caz he can bat better than the other pacers and an allrounder is selected to attract more spectators in the ground... WHAT MORE CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THAT TEAM !!!!

Yousuf thrashed Afridi two days in a row but that never made to the heading ...only about Misbah.
So everyone has a solution for paksitan team. Here is my solution. They should have three different teams for T20, One days and Test. There should be very few exceptions where players should be allowed to play more than one format. They need to define their roles and stick to it. Once you allow players to play in all the formats their technical faults become more evident in the format they are not very comfortable with. You can see lots of examples like arhar ali, nasir jamshed etc who used to perform well in one format before they are introduced in all forms. Older players like razzaq, afridi and shoaib should be restricted to T20. Hafeez should not play test and should be used as lower middle order batsmen as bestfor one day matches. I still think we have enough good players to match the best in the world.....may be not...)
Yousuf is saying that Misbah takes too long to get going. That might be true but Misbah and Yousuf have a similar strike rate in odi's. Yousuf's strike rate was 75 and Misbah's is 73. It's easy to criticize to rather than accept your own shortcomings. This is the same Mohammed Yousuf who retired just because he wasn't selected for the inaugural edition of the World T20.
I am sick and tired of these ex cricketers acting as if they never lost a match. This is the same Mohammed Yousuf under whose captaincy Pakistan lost 6 test matches and 5 ODI's in a row. He criticizes Afridi for getting a spot in the team without playing domestic cricket. Last time Pakistan played South Africa in the UAE, Yousuf was injured. He returned for the last odi without playing any domestic cricket and took Asad Shafiq's place in the team who had actually played in that tournament. Was that okay? Then there is Shoaib Akhtar who talks as if he never bowled badly. He talks as if he never had differences with his teammates. Sikandar Bakht talks as if he's taken 300+ wickets in international cricket. It's okay to criticize the team when it plays bad. But that criticism should have some logic. And that logic unfortunately is missing.
He is absolutely right, Misbah seems to only apply one tactic that he try to play bit longer innings to inspire the team and nothing else, Any one seen AB deviliars batting in last one dayer would know how a Captain should play and at the same time plan how to win the match. Misbah did exactly opposite in 4th one day compared to ABD, instead of plan to win the match early, he allowed to run rate to climb up and then left the tailenders to deal with situation. A captain inspire and motivate players to win matches, he managed to play bit better than his team but failed the team in the process. Team is also misplaced, batsmen are doing well in bowling Afridi and professor shown the door if they are not batsmen anymore, specialists should keep their original duty.
Indians win because they worry about the game than kneeling at the first sight of an open space.

Hashim Amla is top batsman by having long beard. Whats wrong with it and nothing to with beliefs. Misbah/Team failure is due to lack of inconsistent batsmen. Yousuf is correct!

I do agree that the overall defensive mentality is flawed since Pakistani team was an aggressive lot . what is needed at the moment are few fresh faces Afridi Hafeez Asad have to go. Umar Akmal need to get his head straight, and we have to get out of this mess one match at a time!! The boys need better training like scenario practising so they are better prepared for different situations!!

Misbah took over the team when the so-called allrounder, also known as Flop Flop Afridi quit the test captaincy after one match and gave the reigns to the match fixer Salman Butt. Misbah took a down and out team and taught them to play with integrity and ethics. He is more responsible for all the wins we have had than any other player, coach or manager who may try to take the credit (such as people like Mohsin Khan who want to take credit for the 3-0 sweet of England yet forget about the ODI losses and other losses during his own coaching tenure). Point is, Misbah is a fighter - he is not the most talented cricketer in Pakistan but he is is the most toughest and the only man who we can 100% say is not involved in any shady dealings or actions. Yousef can whine all he wants, he was way more talented than Misbah but did not even have half the courage and integrity and fighting spirit than Misbah has.
Mullahs and dogs should not be allowed to go anywhere close to any thing Cricket. Either they would try to convert it to religious terrorism or cause martyrdom to an otherwise civilized game. Truely agreed to Muhammad Yousaf. Misbah is leading the team in negative way. His batting is extremely defensive and he cant play the winning innings like Inzee do.

I do agree with his point in regards to setting a positive and aggressive approach for the new players. At the same time, if you take Misbah's contribution out, then what do you have left? One of the biggest issues is that we have to stop selecting tried and tested players. Win or lose, we must persist with younger players. At the very least, the investment might pay off in the future.

Most of the readers bashing Yusuf, perhaps didn't watch the programe in which he presented his thoughts on the current dismal performance of the divided-arrogant team. Even Shoaib Akhtar supported Yusuf's recommendation to bring back Inzimam as a batting coach. Now how about that? Yusuf presented a very fair analysis and I fully endorse his suggestion to send Akmal and doom doom Afridi to play "domestic" cricket because they are ruining and blocking the careers of upcoming talent. Yusuf may be full of flaws but I am sure his career statistics are much better than any other batsman currently in our team.
M. Y, should stop supporting mullah in the team. Even if one excludes Misbah who would replace him? M. Y is talking as if Pakistan is full of quality batsmen. When the whole team batting is failing why target the only one consistently scoring? If Misbah comes in at number 3 or even before that and gets out cheaply then the whole team would be out under 100. Who is a dependable middle order bat in Pakistan or even on the horizon? If Inzy and M. Y were the selectors where would they find new dependable bats who score consistently against all attacks? Except Shoaib there is not a single youngster who is showing promise which is the real problem not individuals.

I think issue is not misbah its selection process and no domestic structure period.
Mullah Yousuf should stop trying to incite hatred and stop being bitter because it was he and Inzamam Ul Haq, along with Saeed Anwar who ruined the fighting, aggressive unit we were in the late 90s, by introducing the tableegi jammat into the cricket grounds, which has made our players a bunch of sheep. I agree to Yousaf. Misbah does have a strange batting technique. He can't make singles. He either stops the ball for few overs and then hits couple of sixes. He doesn't know how to rotate the strike and is a bad wrong model to follow.

Hate to break it to ya my friend but Imran Khan himself was one of the biggest schemers and manipulators during his glory days. Who can forget how he led a revolt against Asif Iqbal and then Javed Miandad in the early 80s'. After he attained the captaincy, he basically got solid support from cricket administrators appointed by the military junta of Gen. Zia otherwise there were way too many players in his team who would had him kicked out in a jiffy.
The Mullah Brigade should be kept at an arms length by Najam Sethi. Religion is never to be mixed with sports and politics. As for Inzi. He was a genius once but Pakistan saw how is religious fanaticism got Pakistan kicked out so acrimoniously in 2007 World Cup.

Yusuf is right to some extent, but to me post imran khan, the biggest problem Pakistan cricket is facing is indiscipline. If x is made skipper, y nd z start revolting or scheming something behind hIs back. Talented players are ruining their career by indulging in nefarious activities. As long as these concerns are not taken care of Pakistan can't be force to be reckoned with which it used to be.

*All players selection must be on merit basis for two years contract and renewal based on good performance in major national tournaments such as Quaid-e-Azam trophy.

100% AGREE with your view. Yousuf, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam have all contribututed to the decline of the batting unit due to their bringing tableegi jamaat to the cricket field. Inzamam used to make the players stop practice and sit around a circle while tableegi jamaat preached to them during the middle of training sessions at Qaddafi Stadium Lahore. Yousuf, when he was captaining the team in New Zealand, spent most of his time in the middle of the 2nd test match trying to get Daniel Vettori to convert rather than concentrating on the cricket match he was supposed to be leading his team in. These people need to stay away from our team, we have enough problems as it is without adding to it by having the tableegis take a active role in our team.
Guys - Keep the relgion and religious orientation aside and view his analysis on Cricketing merit. No one can question the cricketing abilities of Inzi, Yousuf, and Saeed Anwar. It is the job of the administration to keep the focus to Cricket. What players and coaches do outside of their job roles is up to them and no one should be able to dictate it.
Yousuf's analysis about Misbah is absolutely correct. Look at what Misbah's approach has done to Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shahzad, and Asad Shafiq. When you change the natural tendency of the players too much, you end up getting them confused, and that's what these natural stroke players have become. Keep Sohaib Maqsood playing under Misbah and you will see what happens to him as well.
@Jibran: Perhaps some Pakistanis refuse to accept that the 5 essentials of Islam cannot be overlooked even in war. Hashim Amla's faith has not adversely affected his game. And Wayne (now Walid) Parnell is bowling at his best despite his growing beard!

Inzimam was a world-class batsman; for you to negate his sporting and coaching skills because of his religious life is more stupid than anything Inzimam has ever said. Inzimam helped out the Pakistani batsmen before the India tour of last December and the results were obvious. Nasir Jamshed is a clear case in point. Yusuf's argument is spot-on; the main problem with the batsmen is their defensive approach and inability to make big scores. Thoughtful analysis by Yousuf. Despite Misbah being an excellent Captain with a terrible team, maybe he isn't the best role model for batting (compared to our greats like Saeed Anwar etc).
Sour grapes by Yousuf. When he led the team, he was the most negative captain we ever had, let's remember the series against Australia when Yousuf's negative mindset and captaincy resulted in us losing a match we had almost won. Not to mention, all the negative selections he used to make as a Captain. Blaming Misbah is wrong, because it shows Yousuf is as bitter as any other cricketer, who does not know when his time is up. One of the reasons our team is in decline is because of has-beens like Yousuf, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez, people who do not accept that their time is up and gracefully retire.
Keep mullahs away from selection, as well as coaching process. They belong to mosques not professional cricket.
Why do you want Inzamam as batting coach Yousuf? Just so you guys can reintroduce the influence of Tableegi Jamaat into the team? Thanks but no thanks. And why are you bitter about Misbah Ul Haq, because he did not want you in the team because of the infighting you always caused?
Stupid idea. Inzamam and Saeed Anwar are the ones who destroyed Pakistan cricket. They brought religion into the dressing room, where young cricketers were required to fast and pray 5 times a day to remain in the team, instead of focusing on their game and fitness. These two must banned for life.
Oh yes, just because Misbah refused to bring 'discipline' in the team through religious activities like you and Inzi did, he becomes a bad role model. When we have people who are playing for personal gain, or unsure of their batting skills, or batting senselessly (Hafeez, Afridi, Jamshed), then batting failures are bound to happen almost consistently. How are you relating all of this to Misbah?!!
