First off, let us rid us of the canard that the War on Terror started when the Americans bombed/invaded Afghanistan. As said by myself in this space as well as elsewhere over the years, but particularly by the sagacious and well-informed Brigadier (retd) Asad Munir, the TTP emerged far before the Americans did in Afghanistan-II. He says (The News, July 6, 2013 “Narratives on the TTP”, italics mine): “In 1994, the Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) initiated an armed movement for enforcement of Shariah in the Malakand Division. The group took control of some districts through the use of force. It took the Frontier Corps more than a month to dislodge the TNSM from the areas it had captured. Nizam-e-Adl was introduced and established in Malakand in 1995 — later revised in 1998.
“However … leaders of the TNSM enforced Taliban’s rule in Swat and Bajaur, led by Fazlullah — son-in-law of Sufi Mohammad (and now the ‘Emir’ of the TTP) — and Faqir Mohammad, respectively. In 1996, the Afghan Taliban captured Kabul. Inspired by their achievements, a Taliban force was raised in the Orakzai Agency in 1997. In 1998, a Taliban force emerged in Mirali, North Waziristan.” So there! Can we please stop getting confused any more about who started the killing?
But back to the disgusting statement. Has Munawwar Hassan forgotten the systematic killing spree against the armed forces particularly the army and its senior officers, not sparing their children either? Does he forget the attack on the Parade Lane Mosque by his heroes whose dead he terms ‘shaheed’; the blowing up of buses carrying clerical staff of the ISI; the attack on the GHQ; Mehran Base; POFs, Wah; Kamra, and most recently, the attack on a bus carrying lower staff of the K-P Secretariat to Charsadda?
Has he forgotten the attack on the police training centre in Lahore and the ISI offices in Lahore and Faisalabad and on the FIA headquarters in Lahore? Or the attack in Sukkur, all of the above claiming tens of lives and leaving scores mutilated?
Has he, indeed, forgotten the attack on innocent women and children in Lahore’s Moon Market and on the women’s Meena Bazaar in Peshawar which, too, took so many innocent lives and mutilated many more? And the shooting in the head of a young girl on her way to school in Swat?
Indeed, has Hassan already forgotten the attack on the Peshawar church barely a month ago in which upwards of 100 innocent people were killed and scores were mutilated, or the attacks on several churches across Pakistan before this one, one even on the good people who run the Christian Hospital in Taxila and which ministers mainly to Muslims: 90 to 10! Three poor nurses died that day, Amir Sahib, and when the news went around, the women of Taxila came out, rolling pins and dandas in hand to stand guard, daring your pets to come attack again.
The JI has shown its true colours several times in the past, only we Pakistanis were slow in recognising these religious fascists for what they are: religious fascists. And now this! This really takes the cake and I simply have to ask Hassan a question that Senator Zahid Khan asked: What does the Amir of the JI think of the many Jamaatis who lost their lives fighting the Afghan War against the Soviets during Afghanistan — I, in which they were not only helping and supporting the Americans but were also using their weapons and ammo and money? Incidentally, were the Americans who died fighting the god-less Soviets shaheeds?
Munawwar Hassan must resign or be made to leave: he is only sowing more confusion in an already confused country. Let the JI be proscribed for at least five years too, so no one dare denigrate the fine sacrifices of our young sons and daughters.

Any sane person would condemn the type of extremism that has gripped Pakistan in the last decade. But the hypocrisy of those raising their voices against this extremism often exceeds the fascists’ own actions and obfuscates the sane mind from supporting either side. Could Kamran Shafi please elaborate on why these conflicting ideologies never went to war before our military adventurism into the tribal areas? For every charge against the accused is an endless defense.
What Munawer Hussain has said is nothing but the JI's inner policy and manifesto. A good analysis but a lousy conclusion. "Let the JI be proscribed for at least five years too, so no one dare denigrate the fine sacrifices of our young sons and daughters". Means leaving space for them to return after 5 years and take revenge from Pakistan?
@Altaf Hussain, Mumbai My favourite Pakistani columnist has been corrupted by just a temptation of a mere likelihood of a diplomatic posting in London as Pakistan"s High Commissioner there. God knows whether he will get that post or not, but we have forever lost a good columnist who spoke his mind boldly on the basis of what he considered as facts!
I love how Pakistanis comments strongly suggests banning JI, SSP, LeJ, TTP etc but the same pakistanis leave no stone unturned to defend JuD, LeT, Haqqanii Group.
You guys need to shed this hypocrisy! Condoning a violence of one and condemning others is just pure bigotry.
You cannot have keep snakes in your backyard and feel safe.
Well said Mr Shafi.
Sandip
I think you guys should raise a lot of hue and cry about your PM refusing to go to Sri Lanka under pressure from the parties down south. They are showing sympathy to terrorists after all, as you would agree. Not any different from Munawwar Hassan, eh!
Munawwar Hassan must resign or be made to leave: he is only sowing more confusion in an already confused country. Let the JI be proscribed for at least five years too
Sir,
I have two small doubts,
A. Does Munawwar Hassan speak for himself alone? Or does he represent those who are anguished by the martyrdom of 'innocents' of Lal Masjid? You know there is a large number of them and not in the J.I. alone.
B. When you say 'Proscribe', Do you mean as in LeT and LeJ are 'Proscribed' in Pakistan?
Excellent article, though it ended rather suddenly without any notice! Wasn't TTP created by Pakistani Army/ISI to provoke population of Jammu & Kashmir state of India? Now this 'enfant terrible' has got so addicted to killing that it doesn't know it is killing its own 'abbajans'? Poetic justice! Pakistani Army is harvesting what it sowed ! So why the author exclude this part from his narrative?
@polpot: add to the list the deposition of the mughal rule
no human can decide who is shaheed
Incidently, why nobody is asking our friend Imran khan, the courageous man whose party is ruling with JI, his opinion on this thug, Munawar Hasan. He must have some kind of answer being as a politician who has learned a few tricks on what to say.
@Imran Hussain: Let us assume for a moment that Benazir is a 'shaheed' or for that matter any woman who died for her fight for Islam. What will she get instead of seventy two virgins? Seventy two men? You are obviously right in saying that the debate on 'shaheed' is for morons only.
@csmann: This kind of Mullahs should not be allowed in Mosques as well. They have done enough damage to the very fabric of Pakistani society, poisoned the minds of naive people, brough shame to Islam and Pakistan. They are enemies of state and hence they should be locked-up behind bars or hanged under treason act.
So wait the same army that made the "mujaheddin" now is POed that someone called their creation martyrs. Go on Pakistan, you never cease to amaze me.
Muanwar hasan is angry at USA because his jihad factory is no more funded by US aid. He miss those good old days when young men were motivated for Jihad without the permission of their parenst and JI leaders got their cut for recruiting
We support and sponsor terrorism on unarmed civilians in neighboring countries. We arrogantly dismiss India's concerns under. "Terrorism under nuclear umbrella strategy" meaning India cannot and should not retaliate. We come up with all kinds of lame excuses ranging from denying the existence of our terrorist "assets" to lying through the teeth even when evidence is produced. Obviously we are paying for our hypocrisy. Our chest beating only further illustrates our hypocrazy.
Mullah has committed treason. Another golden opportunity to implement article 6, which has never been used before. Please invoke it this time, just for our enjoyments sake.
Excellent piece, but @funny, I so wish you were right when you said that on this one, the whole nation will agree. If the whole nation could agree on this, the Taliban problem would be solved.
Strong, well reasoned and hard hitting. Munawar Hassan is no idiot, he has deliberately made this remark to test the reaction not so much that of the public, but that of the armed forces. It is pure mischief making and if not put down firmly, it will be achieve its objective of causing a rift in the armed forces. Thanks to Zia, the JI has an established base built over the years of sympathetic minds to play with. The good thing is that the understanding is dawning that something wrong can be put right, if the will do so exists.
"Let the JI be proscribed for at least five years too"
Just 5 yrs... Are you kidding? These guys need to be banished for eternity as the Bangladeshis are doing... No wonder the Bangladeshis being wise guys separated from you...
Generals must prove now that the blood of their Jawans and Officers is more important than their B Team. Divorce should be complete and final.
@A. Salma: There are wheels within wheels no one has questioned, leave aside have answers for. No one really questioned how the jail breaks in Bannu and DIK took place either, a convoy of vehicles passing through multiple military check posts without being stopped at even one. There is a reason why there is so little credibility for any statement made by the Government or ISPR -- not difficult to understand why Pakistan is seen as a perpetrator of terror globally, a victim of terror locally. Running with the Hare and hunting with the Hound cannot succeed in anything but the very short term.
Nothing against what the auther says but Isn't one man's terrorist another man's hero? That's exactly what Pakistanis have been saying for so called "Kashmiri struggle". So why does it hurt so much when the shoe gets onto the other foot?
@csmann: I wish I could recommend your response over a million times. Sadly that is not the case.
In India a terrorist is a terrorist and in Pakistan a terrorist is a Martyr +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ May the twain never meet. Today all Indians thank the Brits for the Partition.

Agreed that the JI leader declaring the jawans killed as not shaheeds is disgusting. While munawwar hassan might have forgotten attacks against the armed forces, may i ask what the khakis have been doing? why khakis haven't finished off the ttp by now, god knows we have given then enough money and training. Why is it that our enemy number one from baitullah to hakimullah have been eliminated by USA and not our khakis? why is that OBL. hakimulah to recent Dr Nasiruddin Haqqani are found and killed within stone throw distance from the khakis presence? Something is very fishy, i wish Saleem shehzad was alive to blow the lead off rotten members of the armed forces.
The Amir of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Munawwar Hassan's statement is deplorable, some how his religious teachings has lost bearing, in the guise of being a religious leader, he thought he could get away with his hateful mutterings or is there more to this spat. I would like to know who was financing TNSM's battle in Malakund and Swat in early 1990's to impose their brand of Islam. I thought JI was always hand in glove with the establishment and they got their nourishment for GHQ Rawalpindi, so what is happening now, are they getting divorce from them, it will be good to know. I don't recall his predecessor Mr.Qazi ever said any derogatory utterance against his benefactors, perhaps the fissure is widening. On a lighter note, did you move your column to Monday instead of Friday, I was scanning the website on Thursday evening ( our local time) but did not see it.
Not surprised at all....what do you expect from a party that stood against the creation of Pakistan.......and stupid stupid us that we made them to sit on your shoulders and now they aint getting down, we have them till the end of our miserable existence. We deserve what we are getting....
While I agree with author's argument. I think it is way too emotional. The fact of the matter is when we get into this debate of who is a shaheed or not, we are naturally allowing the right wingers to win! Shaheed, Musalmaan, Islam, Jihad is their terminology not ours. Pakistan Army is PAKISTAN's ARMY not ISLAM's ARMY!
It is a sad fact to see that people like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benazri Bhutto and Salman Taseer who died as seculars for this country to be crazily chanted as shaheed. Let us simply say that the soldiers who die for this country do not die for a religion BUT for a COUNTRY. In this we say that we appreciate their sacrifice, but we do not crazily go overboard and prove to someone that they are shaheed or in afterlife they will get 72 virgins. The fundamentalists however die for a different idea than country altogether.
For once, I agree with everything you have said. If JI has any respect for the blood that has been spilled in the streets of this country for protection of us all (including their own children), they better sort out their ideological ranks of these black sheep.
A lesson needs to be learned from Bangla Desh, and ban religious parties altogether. Mullahs belong in mosques, not in politics.
A well written article! People including myself may have many differences on your stances on various matters, but I think on this one, the whole nation will agree
